Aquaculture & CitiJOB

Behold! A two-part LJ entry!

**************Topic: 1. (Warning, if you don't feel like using you mind, skip to Topic 2:)***************

Debate topic: Raising Predatory fish... harmful / helpful?

"Aquaculture," this is a term coined for raising livestock in the ocean, or Saline environments. Now, when you think of this, you should think about Asia and shrimp. This isn't a good example of wasteful aquaculture nowadays, but it is still quite an environmental hazard due to impoverished asian nations attempting to raise shrimp in quantities they can't handle.

Shrimp are generally lower on the food chain than most things. Feed for these things used to be around 30% fish and 70% "other," usually plant-based material. After about, oh, 10 years of people doing research, this is now down to about 3% making it wise and not considered wasteful. Thailand, who's shrimp raising facilities increased over 3000% in the last 20 years, has ravaged most of their natural mangrove beachfronts and destroyed independent fisherman's way of life due to polution from the improperly raised shrimp farms. You would think that dumping huge amounts of sludge, salt, and toxins in the environment would be good, right?... yeah... go THailand! Literally, the stuff has the consistancy of TAR, the salinity of, well, SALT, and enough harmful bacteria to cause a full grown cow to pass out after only a teaspoon full. A rather stupid one decided to drink from the black sludge spewed into the river, and collapsed. WEEE!!!

On the other hand, Hawaii doesn't overpopulate the farms, doesn't use antibiotics, and has plastic lined ponds that don't seep into ground water sources. The water is then filtered many times and then put back into the ocean. That is why Hawaiin shrimp is better than most shrimp.

getting of shrimp, we move up to Talapia. Talapia are fresh water fish originally found in the nile river in Africa. Next to carp, they are one of easiest and most prolific fish to raise in farms. Surprisingly, good talapia can be as much as 8.99 a pound despite its abundance. Why does this work? WOuldn't they need fish to support them? Nope! THey are omnivorous! That is why this works. THey don't need smaller fish to survive! They can live on feed relying on less than 1% fish!

Going past Talapia, we now have the debate topic.... TUNA. Hooray for these great ideas. Now, a large bluefin tuna can be sold to Japanese Sushi Fisheries for basically thousands of dollars! Of course, fishing for tuna has its problems too, such as catching dolphins and blah and balh in the nets... an No, places really haven't improved too much of that crap. Maybe America has, but America is hardly the largest fishing industry in the world. So, and alternative is to raise them on farms. Now, the stupid part. TUNA IS AN APEX PREDATOR. IT NEED FISH TO EAT TO SRUVIVE. THEY ARE NOT OMNIVOROUS. EACH FISH THEY EAT CAN POSSIBLY CONTAMINATE IT MORE WITH TOXINS. REmember, 12 miles off shore, there are no laws. People have taken to raising these and other seafood, in weird hyrdo tents they inject food into that is basically ground up other smaller fish.

Other places, like SPain, do this right on their shores. They basically fish for smaller, less edible or inedible fish. The tuna then go through about, oh each one consumes its weight in fish in a couple months or so. Each day requiring several pounds or more. Incase you haven't noticed, What was the last predatory mammal or so we raise for food that turns a profit? hmmm.. Someone may say Alligators, that's why they have those farms... Uhmm.. no... The meat on an alligator hardly equates to the amount of food spent on said gator. Admission to the farms, the skin they sell, and the whole novelty of other merchandise / shows, is what makes them profitable. YOU CAN'T RAISE PREDATORS FOR A PROFIT! SIgh... AND IF YOU DID, YOU ARE DESTROYING SOME ENVIRONMENT OR SOME FOOD CHAIN!.... OR CAN YOU? HSOULD IT BE DONE? CAN IT BE DONE? WOULD YOU DO IT?

ME? TUna is insanley expensive! SO are diamonds! Synthetica diamonds are cheaper than real ones, and generally, not too desirable. If I had a diamond making kit, and it yielded profit, sure, why not? BUT, that isn't the way it works. Diamond making takes a lot of time, money, resources, people, equipment, time again, LUCK, then the cutting / polishing skill and Merchandisng... WEEE THAT!!!

How to make TUna profitable / not destructive to the environment? Fleh@ If I had the capital and a good idea on that one, I wouldn't post it here, but it still seems to be a giant waste of time in my book. It is just way to flawed to raise any livestock not on PLANTS or MOSTLY plants.

DO YOU BELIVE THAT FARMING TUNA SHOULD BE DONE?

me. NO. If there was significatn profit to it? Uhm, well, it is still really wasteful and too taxing on the environment. OVerfishing sucks and is very possible. Most bait fish are near the shores anyway. Take those away, and that can screw up way too much.

Topic 2: My job and I

Yesterday, while sick, shortly after (and in private) a customer screamed at me calling him a forger AFTER HE JUST SIGNED HIS WIFE'S NAME IN FRONT OF ME, I announced to the assistant manager my two weeks notice. THIS IS PRETTY DAMN SIGNIFICANT TO ME! IT was hard, and had to be done at some point, but while I had an huge amount of anger, I decided to remain calm, but let her know that I won't be there come MAy 2nd. SHe loked shocked, and sort of hurt. SHe wisehd me the best, and announced her own goals as well. I later met with HR, and the woman that basically told me there was no future for me here, wasn't too surprised when I told her I was leaving. She wished me the best too, and said that I may get a small severence of unused PTO, SICK, and MISC and OVT payments. I said sweet, sorry, I must move on with my life!

TOday, today I went in like 4 hours late... not due to spite, I really am sick and coughing/// but spite had a little to do with that too. I was going to use a sick day, but I really didn't want to hang around the house all day with my mother, so I worked for the approximatel 50 dollars today. I also had a mandatory meeting, but hey, oh well. My boss announced to everyone that I am leaving, and well, that really finalized it in my eyes. I may or may not get some type of party Next Friday, but I wouldn't want it.

I still have to send the packet to CITIcapital, but I will complete that tomorrow before I go to work (which I don't do until 11:45 anyway)
I must UPS it. Yesterday, I was almost done with several parts of it, until I realized I needed fingerprints taken. THat was entertaining. My local cops are a funny / tough bunch. Heheh... hard to explain...

Misplacing my brith certificate and ss card was amazing yesterday too! They need copies of the SSC, but the birth certificate was jsut something I forgot where I placed it. I also misplaced my boss;s business card, so I had to do some sleuthing to find her number! I almost had a great start there! Phew!! that would have been great!!!

..now, the people at Commerce bank... I obvioulsy like some, and many I am indifferent to. OThers, I jsut don;t know. In the 9 months I was there, we went through 2 csr's, about 12 tellers, and a new RMM was appointed. Did I know them all? well, some I got a chance to know, and most of the ones left are okay with me i guess. as far as CSR's go, I can't think of anyone I don't like. Boss and assistant boss... she was tough, but fair, yet demeaning... ehh... In any case, I amused her and she may or may not miss me. I think she will, even though she may have talked smack about me from time to time. Big deal.. oh well. The Boss was a cool guy. SOmetimes I think there was some transference from his higher ups comig back to his underlings, but we can understand that. He kep most of that separate and is a real cool and funny guy from what it seems when work has nothing to do with the conversation! I hope all future bosses can be like him. oh well again.

I told several repeat customers about departure and that actaully made one upset and a couple cheered me on! Ehh... I will miss some customers. One wealthy dude brings all the girls chocolate covered strawberries that are fuckig the most delicious strawberries / chocolate ever! Like, the 3 dollar a piece things! and he gets like 2 boxes of this shit and doesn';t seem to care if everyone eats them!

other customers jsut tell me about stocks, or ventures, or offer me jobs or stuff.. some just entertain me.

..voluntering for everything for the first 3 months there was crazy, but memorable. It was also closer to the SUmmer, so being outdoors wasn't too bad. I wasn't a fan of SKIGAW, or the 6:00Am Buono bagles, or the PRinceton venture, but i at least did some good with the princeton thing.

other memories... late Friday nights was always entertaining.... some Saturdays were okay. THe first 2 weeks of training was really fun! There were a couple good days too, but many of them were downright torture!!! Esp after my 6 month review! I thought i was doing better than I was, and I was told that I can't move ahead.! THus, I souhgt a new route, and believed that every day aftewards was a waste of my time. I didn't feel like quitting, but every day there was crushing my will, ego, wallet, and heart. I was gong to quite, but out of the blue, I got an e-mail that inspired me to stay. It wans't amazing, it wasn't even meant to be motivating, it was just amusing! More of these followed, and brightened my day! Sometimes, I would jsut tell I customer to wait while I would read, respond, and read it again. oF ocurse, a customer has no idea what I was doing, and needles to say I could have gotten in trouble for this in many different ways, but such a simple pleasure was all it took to take another depressing, dark day, and make it tolerable! heeheh!

I have very little knowledge about my new job, but from what I know, it will be easier, pay more, have better Perks, more pay, a higher title, and piss me off less in general. I may even get to use aim. WHo knows? Either way, CITIcapital has an ALmost INIFINTE upward mobility, including branches in JAPAN I may strongly considere in the following years (provided they treat me right.)

...roar!!! passing out.... g night everyone!
