Fannishly, something happened to me in the last six months - I fell hard for Supernatural and especially for Destiel.

Now, I always liked it but it’s been a slow build from S4 when Kripke was showrunner and Castiel appeared as an angel with a haughty attitude towards humans. And the show and this ship remained on my backburner where it already was ( Read more... )

Ah, Destiel. My current pairing of choise. I have so many feels about it, and love it to death. And yet I also have so many fears about what would happen if it were to become canon. I definitely see the subtext, and yeah, it would feel great to me if it were to become canon (BOOM, YAY, AWESOME QUEER MAIN CHARACTERS). But at the same time, I just have so many issues with how the show, and fandom as a whole, treats the few characters that are canonically identified as queer, that I don't even know how I would handle some of these people (or how they would handle actually getting their ship in canon, as much as they seem to want it).

Part of it might be from seeing Star Trek AOS people argue for Kirk/Spock canon, and seeing the hypocrisy among the group, or seeing people own the main community (at the time) for Albus Severus Potter/Scorpius Malfoy spouting vile and homophobic bullshit on the side.

And okay, maybe another part of it is that I'm sick of having to defend Charlie every time I turn around. Yes, she's a lesbian. NO, THAT'S NOT A PROBLEM! Someone actually tried to argue with me that the show never showed straight minor characters like that in the first few minutes, and I'm like, uhm, I'll take VIEWING FAIL, FOR $500, ALEX! And don't get me started on how it's okay to use gayness for the laughs, but when it's related to Dean's possible bisexuality, than the same people are all, no, it's totes serious guys! And yeah, I know, shitty people are everywhere, but I'm just sick of seeing them, and having to watch them argue for Destiel at the same time that they're being assholes about other queer characters at the exact same time.

Ahem. Sorry. Clearly I have lots of feels on the issue. Still, I can't help but have a tiny sliver of hope that Destiel will become canon by the end of this season (even though I know SPN will tread on my heart, like always). Then again, I also have a tiny sliver of hope that Charlie will become a MC in Season 9 and they'll become the new Scooby Gang of awesome, and that Meg's not really dead, and that Bela can come back, and Jo, and we can have a group of kickass awesome women with the boys and Castiel sorta hanging along and goofing off and hunting with them. So clearly my hopes for the next season's canon aren't very likely to happen, lol.

But yeah, I would love Destiel to become canon by the end of the season, or, at the very least, not give Dean or Castiel another female love interest, so that the possibility remains open. I've recently had a sort of falling out with another one of my fandoms when they pretty much gave everyone a OBHWF sort of situation, and squashed any and all possible alternate pairing hopes, so I really, really hope that doesn't happen here. Not that I'd leave SPN fandom for it (there's always hope for later, and more fics!), but still, it would be disappointing.

Please write more SPN meta! I wants to read all of the metas, and right now I only have a few places to read it (mostly on tumblr)! If there're any people on LJ I should friend for great meta, let me know!

Also, loving the films list, though I'm taking out The Great Gatsby, and adding World War Z, because I love zombie movies (even though I doubt I'll get to see it in theaters, cause I'm broke and can never see stuff when it first comes out) and never really fell for The Great Gatsby.

Okay: They’ve already killed off Castiel and the ratings tanked. So they’re not going to do that again. Or if they do, they’d wait until the series finale but even then I don’t think they’d go there.

I need to find the post on Tumblr (I found it through butterflydm.tumblr.com so you an look through her archives and see if you find it) but, it talked about the differences in tone the different showrunners brought to the show.

Kripke wrote the horror movie of the week-and horror is the genre that likes to rain shit on its protagonists and rob them of their agency and maybe even kill them. Gamble was the hurt/comfort showrunner-another genre that likes to rain shit though not for killing off the protagonists but to drive them towards another person. It’s in her run that the show systematically killed off the network of support Dean and Sam had built up to try to bring them closer together. And Carver’s genre is action-and that involves putting the protagonist on a hero’s journey.

It seems like Carver sees Sam and Dean’s codependency on each other as unhealthy and has a 3-yr plan to wean them off each other and I think what we’ve seen of S8 has given us phase 1 of his plan. And that’s why I think he’d prefer to work towards Destiel as an endgame. Also, he loves Castiel! If Carver’s plan is through S10, I don’t think that Destiel will become canon now. I think it’ll happen S9 or S10. But, I think Castiel and Dean will take a big step towards it by the end of S8.

Are people shitting on Charlie, omg, no. So far, I’ve seen Destielers shit on Meg so, prolly, I shouldn’t be surprised. Slashers being homophobic, OMG. Because of that and the sexism, I just lurk around in fandom, quietly looking for other like-minded people. ;-) Hey, if you know any LJs or Tumblrs I can follow, let me know.

I'll have to go looking for that piece, than. Sounds interesting. I'm definitely not one of those that hated any one particular season, so it'll be interesting to see the breakdown based on who was the taking the mantle (it's also interesting to break it down by episode, but I'm pretty lazy and that takes me forever, ngl).

Poor Meg. I loved her so much, and was so thrilled that they brought her back....just to kill her. I was seriously sitting there going, "Are you fucking with me? Seriously? SERIOUSLY?" So much rage. And so much anger towards the people who hate Meg solely because she's a female character (I read an interesting meta on demons and gender identity, which this reminds me of) who briefly got in the way of people's ship. I mean, if people hate the character for legit reasons, fine, but if it's just because of some bullshit sexism and misplaced ship feelings, well, fuck that. I mean, c'mon, canon's never stopped any shippers before, so why should the brief Megstiel have stopped them?

Honestly, hearing about the sexism, the homophobia (and biphobia), the issue with paganism, the racism, and the whole angel thing were several of the things that kept me from watching the show for a long time. I'm glad I finally gave in and watched it (ngl, the horror episodes were what drew me in, initially), and I'm glad that I finally got the nerve to peek around and speak on the edges of fandom. Obviously I'm not as well-versed in some of the stuff as some people, but I do like reading and sharing and fan-gushing.

On another sidenote, I just wish that there were half as many awesome femslash fics as there are/were picspams that I saw during Femslash February. Destiel is my ship, hands down, but I would love to see some Charlie/Jo, or some other really fun AU femslash pairing.

My issues with Meg is that I still remember when she possessed Sam and sexually threatened Jo. So even if there weren’t any consent issues with Castiel as a mental patient, I still couldn’t get past that. However, my big issue with how she died is that the writers thought that her crowning moment of glory would be as a love interest when no, that’s not how you send off villains or even dubious characters in a blaze of fire. You send them off with redemption and sympathy by doing something so gloriously evil to further the protagonists’ interests.

As for sexism and homophobia, I thought Smallville fandom hardened me for it but, SPN fandom brought a whole new level of wank. Oh well. I actually got into SPN in S2 because I bought S1 DVDs on sale. And I almost wasn’t going to because I’m very meh on horror but everyone kept telling me it's all about the brothers.

Someone told me: You know how christians look at paganism and think, “Oooh, what a cool religion with pretty symbols that we can screw up and appropriate”? That’s how the japanese view christianity. And the show does move towards japanese levels of wtf-ery with christianity, but I sometimes wish it’d go a little but further. KWIM?

SPN femslash, hm. I dunno. This show horribly fails the Bechdel test because it rarely has women let alone two women together. Lois/Tess is my femslash otp if only because of all the screentime they got together on Smallville fighting against and for each other. Anyways. I would love if Ellen and Jody got together in an AU for the combo of no-nonsense women.
