The Vampire Diaries: “Know thy Enemy”
A lot of exciting stuff happened in this episode: Matt and Caroline’s mother know; Alaric is possessed by Klaus; Isobelle! But it’s kinda hard to rant and rave over that when I’m hella squicked over the master / slave dynamic as presented on the show.
I cheered when Bonnie resolved to take on the risk to herself to protect the town. Instead of why-me? whining, she’s embraced that she will have to make difficult decisions and more important, she will own those decisions.
So, to see Stefan and Damon refer to her as “our secret weapon” really creeps me out. These are two white men who dated a woman who owned Bonnie’s ancestor - and let’s not be coy, a house slave is still a slave. And said two white men know that she’s “locked and loaded” with the power of a hundred murdered witches, some of whom they either owned and / or whose descendants they owned.
And to make this all the more squicktastic, Bonnie wants to save the town while the brothers want to save Elena - who is the doppelganger of their slave-owning girlfriend.
Does anyone on the writing team not see how creepy that all looks? I just wanted to jump into my TV and scream at the brothers, “Yo, you both remember the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement!? You both should know that you don’t own her!”
ETA: Oh yeah, even more creepy that Stefan and Damon were acting like the witches’ powers were theirs especially since they made it clear to Damon that he was an unwelcome presence in the house, freezing him in place in the sunlight and de-powering his immortality ring. Now, I don’t think that they know that Bonnie’s powers come at a consequence to her. But still, they have to realize that if they play with an angry someone else’s power, maybe someone will get hurt.
Nikita: “Covenant”
Wow. Just wow. I was so not expecting that. All I expected was some unresolved sexual tension between Michael and Nikita. But wow, we got so much more.
Nikita promised Michael revenge and a way out. Michael wanted out? O.O
And more importantly, Michael’s family was killed via Al Quaeda via Division via Percy? O.O O.O O.O
I was worried that with Alex’s resolve to leave Division that Nikita would no longer have an inside spy. But Michael is perfect.
Lastly, I don’t think Alex is done. I think she’ll be pulled back in, and it won’t be entirely Division, it’ll be a tango between the two. And I’ll love seeing Fonseca play Alex’s resistance and attraction to Division.
