What I love about Rick and Morty

Out of all the series I could be watching my brother recommended me Rick and Morty. I didn’t give it tonnes of time initially, as I’m simply bad at watching TV, even any series I find interesting. Though through the bond we have as brother and sister (he seems to know my taste in things like film and television) Rick and Morty is one of those that we shared together. The main thing that draws me into Rick and Morty is the themes and ideas. Even though it may not be obvious from the appearance of the show it’s actually a very intelligent Science-Fiction animation.

All the characters are complex and varied, they play off each other wonderfully. I personally relate to Rick’s jaded, satirical perspective, he is a horrible person because of his history and he isn’t necessarily evil to the core. He speaks for some of us in regards of how hopeless and miserable life can be and he has his own selfish and violent way of addressing that.

Morty can from the surface be reactive and moany. But if I was in his situation I would probably respond in the same way. Morty unlike Rick has a very emotive and intuitive nature and he’s one of the more human elements throughout the stories.

It’s easy to dislike Jerry (morty’s Dad), though he is the laughter track throughout the series and it is possible to feel sorry for him once and while. He tries, he’s just not very good at trying. I personally understand Beth’s perspective the most, She’s a very intelligent woman who is often out shone by her genius father, and yearns for his recognition and prise. This doesn’t stop her being her own clever self, she deals with everything in her stride even if that is a good cry and a bottle of wine. I often side with her statements, views and reactions. Summer however irritates me; I don’t understand her desires even at her age of 17, I was reading Sartre and listening to Metal and Rock music when she’s concerned about her social status and mating rights. Though she often makes good statements and points out things that the other characters often miss.

The minor characters are memorable and wonderfully ridiculous. Mr Meeseeks and Bird Person being the most notable, for uniqueness, purpose and outlook. They are involving individuals who are greatly likable. Similarly, I’m interested in the incorporation of animal points of view, namely squirrels and dogs. The conspiracy theories of small mammals, squirrels being the main one here, tap into previous cartoons like Foamy the Squirrel and Pinky and Brain. I’m in on the joke and love it, ever the more for it. In the episode ‘Lawnmower Dog’ where the dogs taken over the world I find to be strong commentary on how we treat animals in general

You can get music wrong for a show in most cases. It can be forgettable or irrelevant. Rick and Morty has done us proud for it’s soundtrack, the title theme is reminiscent of X-Files or Dr Who and you know exactly what kind of show you’re about to witness. And there is well judged and memorable musical moments throughout the series, Evil Morty theme and Schwifty in Here.

The world of Rick and Morty is stunning! From its alien and creature invention, to its worlds and landscapes. Sure this is where you really realise the creators crude sense of humour, the fact that most of the aliens looks like phallus (that’s penises to you and me) and yes there is a whole stinking world of bums and farts. Sure it’s childish, but it doesn’t go over board for me at least.  The vibrancy and colour as well as the absurd still works.

Ok, for it’s cons which from my standing isn’t many. Sometimes it can ramble, it’s fast paced and on occasion you need to keep up with what’s going on, though this can also add to your intrigue and keep you on the ride giving you glimpses into extra pieces of plot and possibility. There is quite a lot of violence and disgusting humour can’t deny that, but if other aspects of the show interest you, in my case that’s the science fiction. Especially the philosophy, adsurdity and bitter satirical humour that’s why I love it!

There'll be more on a different topic later...
