I gave a presentation in my Dipl 417 class today. It was about the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
800,000 people died in only 100 days, 2 million were displaced and forced to become refugess, and then a further 30,000 died within refugee camps.
The reality is devastating. The international community stood by and let it happen. They knew it was happening, the signs were glaringly obvious way back from the 1970s, if not earlier.
The more I research, look beyond U.S/UN excuses, the more I feel letdown and angry at what I had idealistically expected from international players... and thats just my removed and unrelated opinion! imagine how the Rwandans feel.
The more I learn and experience the world I so wanted to get involved in, the more it devastates me. I guess the point is to keep going though, not to give up and hope that lessons can be learned and improved upon. But every now and then it is an awfully grim picture.
Anyway Ive got my headphones on and am listening to the Ambrosian Boys Choir singing 'Suo Gan' from 'Empire of the Sun'. Its such an amazing piece of music. Its things like these that go a long way in reaffirming my faith in humanity. The fact that someone out there created something this exceptional, I guess it just shows people are capable of incredible things.
