Review:
It’s taken me an entire two days to come to terms with the demise of John Jasper …how could they?!
Joking aside, part two was the more interesting part for me; whether that was because the story wasn’t fractured like part one or whether it was purely because we saw more of Matthew in it - and by that, I don’t actually mean more of Matthew but more of his character; John Jasper was really brought to life. The scenes now consisted of less drug taking - which didn’t mean to say Jasper wasn’t taking them, and showed more of the effects that the drugs were having on him. We also got to see the love and affection that Jasper had for Edwin, despite him being his love rival and despite the actions of Edwin Drood snr, which could have caused Jasper to resent Edwin jnr. I have to say that no matter how evil (bit too strong a word perhaps) that Jasper was, you couldn't help but feel sorry for him in the end - well I did anyway.
Unfortunately I don't really have anything to say on the other characters except the kid was great!
All in all there were plenty of twists to the story - all down to modern day experiences. I think I read somewhere that Charles Dickens had spoken of his plans for the direction of the story - it would be interesting to know how much of part two was written around Dickens’ thoughts and ideas and how much was 21st Century fantasy.
In all an excellent drama - am I too old to start reading Dickens I ask myself?
I will however add that I do have but one niggle/gripe…Matthew (or Mr Stunt-Double), that jump was NOT the best!!!!
And I'm still finding it hard to get back to thoughts of Kevin Walker!
