Ovation has inked a deal with Content Television for the rights to The Scapegoat, a two-hour feature film scheduled to debut early next year.
Inspired by Daphne du Maurier's book, The Scapegoat is a suspenseful drama starring Matthew Rhys (Brothers & Sisters). Set in the early 1950s, it follows a Greek-language schoolteacher who winds up living the life of his doppelgänger.
The Scapegoat, produced by Island Pictures, was written and directed by Charles Sturridge (Gulliver's Travels). It is slated to premiere on Ovation on January 22.
"We've had our eyes on The Scapegoat for some time, so we were delighted to wrap up our licensing agreement with Content Television," said Kris Slava, the senior VP of programming for Ovation. "This film is compelling from beginning to end and really masters the art of cinematic anticipation. Matthew Rhys gives a sensational performance as his character wrestles with the moral dilemma of assuming another's life. Charles Sturridge is one of the legendary British writer/directors of our time and this film is beautifully shot and artfully told-a great fit for Ovation."
Melissa Wohl, the senior VP of worldwide distribution for Content Television, added: "We are very pleased to sign this major deal for The Scapegoat in the U.S. following its international launch at MIPCOM. Ovation is the perfect home for this classic, world-renowned tale, brought to life by some of the television industry's finest production and acting talent. We are sure it will prove a must-see for the network's discerning audience in early 2013."
