"GERTRUUUDE!"
"Oh, brother. WHAT MOOOOM?"
Gert was rummaging through the bottom of one of her drawers in nothing but her socks and underwear, trying to find the one article of clothing that was, of course, eluding her now that she thought she might need it. Cracking the door to her room open, she stuck her head out, coming face-to-face with her mother, the easygoing yet firm Stacey Yorkes.
"Gertrude," her mother gave her a smile, albeit a parental one, "what is it you're going off to do?" Her voice carried a little more than a healthy helping of motherly concern... and authority. Gert sighed, knowing where this was going to end up.
"I'm going down to the river with a guy from the school." She shuffled back, closing the door. "And before you say anything, mom, you were the one telling me to get out of the house more and make friends around here. He's an all right guy, I guess. At least more tolerable than some of the other guys in this town." She went back to the dresser, digging deeper until she finally came across faded forest green fabric, and gave a sigh of relief. Gathering up some other clothes, she stacked them in her arms, then opened the door again.
"I'm your mother, Gertrude, and I just want to make sure you're safe. Have you met this... what did you say his name was?" She followed along as Gert made her way into the bathroom, closing the door again.
"Gojyo, mom. His name's Gojyo." Struggling with the clothes while hopping on one foot, Gert squirmed her way into the green fabric, then let out a dissatisfied grunt. "Dammit... guess I do need a new one... and no, mom, I haven't met him in person yet."
"Language, Gertrude." Stacey leaned against the door frame. "And you think he's safe?"
"Mother, really, what kind of girl do you take me for?" She pulled the skirt on over her tights. "It's not like I have such a lack of self-worth that I need to find some scumbag to sleep with just to feel like I'm a real person." She pulled the short-sleeve polo over her head. "Besides, I figured I would die an Old Maid, never knowing true love, the warmth of a man's touch, or the value of a good boning."
"GERTRUDE YORKES!" Her mother yelled at the door. "You watch your mouth!"
"Oh, come off it mom, it's 2008." She opened the door, giving her mother a matter-of-fact stare from behind the 'granny glasses' she so favored. Pulling her hair back into a ponytail, she started down the stairs. "Anyway, he's a townie who's on the school network. It's not like he could try anything bad. Besides, I'll have my phone with me."
"I'm your mother, Gertrude. It's in my job description to worry." She followed Gert down the stairs, then stood to one side of the door. "Promise you'll call when you get to the river."
"Yes, mom, I'll call when we get there." Raising her eyebrows, she continued, "AND when we're on our way back."
"That's my girl." Stacey gave Gert a close hug, and opened the door for her. "Just make sure we know what's going on, all right?"
"All right. See you later, mom." With that, Gert stepped out the door, and set to waiting out by the curb for Gojyo.
