Check out this link....

Then you can read this.

OrderOfTwilight:
wow

CaptainKrazee:
..well, it is wow.com ;)

OrderOfTwilight:
...thanks for making that pun

CaptainKrazee:
anytime

OrderOfTwilight:
haha

CaptainKrazee:
so, why 'wow' =p
?*

OrderOfTwilight:
just
why would they think that's a good idea for schooling? xD

OrderOfTwilight:
I meant the 'interest driven' schooling
that's fine
after a point

CaptainKrazee:
heh 'after a point'

OrderOfTwilight:
well if you start them out at 'interest driven' learning at age 6
...
they're going to miss something big

CaptainKrazee:
...like what?

OrderOfTwilight:
like
times tables?
or spelling
or some grammar

CaptainKrazee:
because, that can't be learned in correlation with an interest?

OrderOfTwilight:
it could

CaptainKrazee:
grammar, reading, writing about stuff

OrderOfTwilight:
but them being interested in all of them

CaptainKrazee:
math as well

OrderOfTwilight:
seems.. rare

CaptainKrazee:
well. somewhere in the comments of that article was mentioned about a kid who ended up writing a 4 page essay on something he was interested in, when he was only required to write a paragraph. if you work with an interest, and apply other subjects to that interest (like my sisters example about graphing colors of m&ms XD) then I can see how someone would be more interested in the other subjects as well, at least in how it relates to the interest
maybe someone's interest lies in airplanes.. one can talk about science, how its built, math equations, geography, history of airplanes etc

OrderOfTwilight:
true

CaptainKrazee:
does it really seem that crazy still?

OrderOfTwilight:
it wasn't totally crazy to begin with
I just think that they should wait til after like elementary school

CaptainKrazee:
well, impractical I guess
actually, I would think starting younger would be better
it makes sense to me to instill a love of learning into a child from a young age, and is far more practical IMO, then setting them down with a workbook or something
especially since younger children tend to be less likely to want to sit still for long periods, which becomes a problem in classrooms anyway

OrderOfTwilight:
but at the same time
without those first few years of learning stuff
what exactly are they going to be interested... in?

CaptainKrazee:
thats why parents guide it. and young kids ARE interested in things. bugs outside, for example

OrderOfTwilight:
I suppose

CaptainKrazee:
my niece has a fascination with spiders. fascination/fear
and as they get older, they gain more or other interests, yes, but they do have them to begin with, and parents can encourage certain things, too
kids DO have personalities to start with, and I believe interest in things is included in personality to an extent

OrderOfTwilight:
yes

CaptainKrazee:
so I'm not really sure I get the point you're trying to make
admittedly, the method wouldn't necessarily work with everyone

OrderOfTwilight:
I dunno
I guess personal prefence

CaptainKrazee:
that works

..Good thing to remember, and not related to the conversation, "Unschooling" is NOT... "parent sits on ass all day while letting kids do whatever they want". If people say they are homeschooling, or whatever, and it can be proven that they aren't doing anything for their kids education, then in fact they ARE being bad parents, and are ..'bad seeds' in home education. Just as one has teachers in public education that don't really do their job well, so the same goes for parents who claim to teach at home. Not a reason to judge the life choice as a whole, or to generalize.

interesting, homeschooling, discussion, parenting, education
