This is a true story about my favourite high school Chinese teacher, Mr Liu.
I wrote an essay about my imaginary trip to China and showed it to Mr Liu. The essay included a passage about doing my homework in my friend's living room.
He glanced over the essay and with a stern look said, "Geoffrey. This essay, it is not interesting enough. You need to make it more funny! Here, let me give you an example. Say 'I did my homework underneath the water bed'. Haha, that is very funny!"
I didn't know what to make of that, but I went back and fixed my essay. It wrote, 'I played table tennis in my friend's living room. His house is very big. It has more than 100 rooms.'
Mr Liu was unimpressed when I showed him. He looked at me as if I was ignorant and said, "Geoffrey. You know. Houses in China are not this big."
I fixed my essay again, attempting to incorporate his sense of humour. I wrote, 'I did my homework underneath the refrigerator.'
He read it and looked up. I saw in his eyes that he pitied my stupidity. He said, "Geoffrey. You cannot fit underneath a refrigerator.
