Yes, I'm a geek. Are you shocked? *grin*

I've had various sources of stress the past few weeks which are sorting themselves out, more or less.

One source was a nagging sore throat and runny nose that didn't want to go away. After stressing out with concern about what this might be (since there also was a cough that I really didn't like with it), I went to the campus health center. After appropriate prodding and listening, the diagnosis is seasonal allergies. I've since been trying different over-the-counter medication for it, looking for one that will work on the symptoms and not make me feel like a battery that's almost out of juice. Still, it's a relief to know what it is that's going on.

The other source of stress has been my lack of a committee. A committee is needed by a Ph.D. candidate for all sorts of things, but ultimately for the dissertation. I've had the presumptive chair set for a while, but this was complicated because she's new to the university and therefore can't officially chair a committee yet. While I'd been told I need to get the committee together now, and then change the chair, when I talked to the second member of the committee (who is the #2 of the department) she said that it actually would be easier to hold off on officially forming the committee rather than changing the chair. So this gives me more time to figure out who the other two members will be.

That is a load off my mind. It will need to be done right away in the fall, but it's not this OMG gotta do it NOW kind of thing, and holding off will result in a better committee and less likelihood of changing it later on. Changes are always possible, but require paperwork.

So the plan for the summer is to do the bulk of the background research and gathering of stuff for comps paper #1, which will be a study of complex consonant clusters across languages. I will also be doing a bunch of reading on diverse topics under the umbrella of sociolinguistics related to gender, in order to get possibilities for comps paper #2, which will be a chapter in my dissertation.

I have a plan. A plan is good.
