My favorite Gene Wilder scene

Aug 30, 2016 10:36

It's from Blazing Saddles, of course.

Bart (Cleavon Little) has had a rough first day as sheriff of Rock Ridge (highlighted by a sweet old lady greeting him with a hearty "Up yours, n*****r!"), and naturally, he's a little depressed. Jim (Wilder), his buddy and deputy, tries to cheer him up:

"You have to remember that these are just simple farmers," he says gently. "These are people of the land.

Wilder is building to the punch line, and you can see that Cleavon Little is desperately, DESPERATELY trying not to laugh:

"The common clay of the New West.

You know.... morons."

Wilder used that gentle voice and innocent face to put over some really nasty material. (See: all of Willy Wonka.)

He will be missed.
