Lunch...Yes!

This has been a good week for eating lunch out. On Monday, my husband, Richard, had a doctor's appt at Madigan Army Hospital. It was at 11:00, so afterward, we went out to lunch at my #2 favorite restaurant: The Great Wall Chinese Buffet. Quite a variety of goodies, including a large sushi display. Their sweet and sour soup is quite tasty, too. The food is fresh and well prepared. The place is really busy...lots of other little old people. I got involved in a walker traffic jam at one of the hot tables...nobody spilled a won ton. Then home and a good book. Finished the book about Civil War Generals.
Thursday, back out to Madigan for my monthly Vitamin B12 shot, monthly blood test, and pick up some medication refills. But first, LUNCH at my #1 most favorite restaurant: Old Country Buffet. Good old fashion home cooking. My Mom's family was from North Carolina (tho Mom was born in North Dakota) and she cooked "southern." Chicken 'n dumplings, greens, corn bread, etc. So eating here takes me back to my childhood. Richard really dislikes this place...he whines that there is nothing he can eat there...to which I reply: "No, not what you CAN eat, but what you are willing to eat." He was the baby of seven kids in the family. And the "baby" ruled the roost...ate what he liked and was never forced to eat what was presented at meals. The baby's every culinary whim was catered to. All the brothers and sisters have told me that is so. Unfortunately, He was the baby, so he never was displaced from this choice position. When we were first married, he rejected just about everything I prepared for meals. So one day I sat him down with my cookbooks and some 5X7 cards and told him to go through the books and pick our and write down the things he did not like or would not eat....he filled two cards, both sides, with what he wouldn't eat. He survives on meat and potatoes, corn and spaghetti. Sure, I have likes and dislikes: I throw up liver and I avoid fish....although lobster, crab, shrimp, and scallops I do enjoy. I am adventurous...I do try things: I've even eaten dog meat. (My Dad, Mom, and I were stationed in Korea in 1946-1948, and no, we didn't know, at the time, it was dog meat...it just looked safe to eat. This was at a dinner party at the local Mayor's house, to welcome Mom and me to Korea. We were to be in Korea for a three year tour, but the North Koreans kept raiding our little town, killing people and burning parts of town. They also had control of the power plant and kept turning off the electric to our town...usually at dinner time. So, in 1948, our family was evacuated with three days notice. The Korean War didn't start until 1950, but we were out of there in '48.)
I got a letter in the mail from our grandson, Alexander. He wrote to me about our coming to visit him soon. Alex is in kindergarten this year, so this writing is new to him. He is good at asking how to spell words. Robin included a translation for me. She addressed the envelope, but I bet Alex put the stamp on it. While we were visiting them last Saturday, he wrote a letter to his Granma Roxy. He wrote it, put it into a envelope and put the stamp on it. His daddy addressed it for him. Alex then went out to the mailbox to mail it. He then wrote a letter to his grandpa (whom he calls PO PO) and gave it to him. After we got home, PO PO kept rereading it, then put it away in his drawer. Something precious.
