The small mason bee house that sits on a south-facing ledge now harbors a couple dozen of mason bee larvae, which have been exploding with growth for the past couple of weeks. I hope I'll have time to post pictures later; they are amazing. It seems to me that these guys, one of our earliest pollinators, were late this year. I saw Momma Mason laying and plastering the babes in their cells with giant blobs of honey as late as 2 weeks ago.

The real reason for the post is the revelation that was this morning's omelette. The chard's  over-tall and topped with buds, the leaves laden with the sawflies that are ready to burst forth and lay their eggs in the leaves of the  neighboring beets, so I really ought to have pulled it all out and made pesto or creamed chard or something last week. No time, though, so I got more fresh chard for my omelette this morning.
Last time this spring, I think; I must pull it today. I can see the fully formed sawflies in the leaves, ready and randy. The beets are calling to them.
