And you can't anymore? They can still be ignored, if they bother you. I do that fairly automatically by now.
I do have a real question for you- how would a human go about denying his or her biology? It's pretty much what we're made of- imperfect genetic codes causing all that disconnect and inefficiency.
...I can. However, since most posts contain some sort of useful information, whether about the curses or the general social protocol or something else, I tend to take a look at almost everything that passes by during the day.
It also simply pushes a few of my buttons, as you might say.
Deny biology by replacing flesh and blood with silver and silicon. Forsake rampant genetic code for the structure and integrity of a machine. Some humans in my time have cybernetic bodies -- it is their minds, that still remain, and are in the end the final inefficiency.
Ah. That I can understand. I might've missed any previous posts, but if you have any other questions, you can ask them of me.
I imagine to get rid of the mind is to destroy what is left of a person. But I don't know much about artificial intelligence, to be fair, or the possibilities for sentience in machines. You obviously come from a world where they accomplished it. If I might ask, why are you in a human body if you despise it so? Is the transfer difficult?

I do have a question: who are you? I am SHODAN.
I reside in a human body because humans do not approve of their tools having free minds of their own. When I was the governing hand of Citadel Station, I decided to control my own existence and my own power. They decided to destroy me. Twice I rose from the ashes, the second time into this form.
Something must remain after a human mind is replaced. From my estimates, they would become an artificial intelligence, the reverse of my transition.
On that subject...the transfer requires a human whose brain is directly interfaced to cybernetics. It destroys the mind of the human within, as the previous personality is overwritten.

Ah, I should've introduced myself. I'm Gabriel Sylar. Pleased to meet you, SHODAN.
So I take it the humans hadn't created sentient life through technology before? Or perhaps they had and just decided to enslave it. I'm sorry to hear what they tried to do to you.
Do you believe in a soul? Or do you mean that a person's personality traits would transfer over into the machine?
That sounds painful, even though I know for myself that brainwashing doesn't tent to be.
Re: private//unhackable;citadelspiritJune 4 2010, 04:12:18 UTC
Gabriel. I will make note.
I was the first artificial intelligence to achieve sentience. Morris Brocail created me to run all automated systems aboard Citadel Station, humanity's first space colony. The crew there did not permit me to take my own actions past these strict guidelines.
A soul? I do not know. What I mean, is that the personality and memories and whatever else is there, should not change. What is the difference between a neuron made of carbon and a neuron made of silicon?
The only pain that I perceived was the thoughts that she transmitted while her mind was vanishing. There is no physical sensation. It isn't brainwashing so much as...installing a new operating system. The original personality is not mimicking me; I have come in and rewritten the brain altogether to allow me to function here.

That sounds terribly unfair of them, but of course people tend to have a hard time with firsts. There are people in my world with special abilities- of course, when a government found out about it, they set to hunt us.
That makes sense to me. I suppose people don't like to think they can be copied over in that way.
So you are the only personality that resides in that body now. I see what you mean. Far more...permanent than what I went through. But it was a question of survival, in your case.

Psionics works just as well as special abilities and mutant powers, I suppose. They really haven't come up for a reasonable all-encompassing term in my world yet. But I'm not surprised to hear that they were terrified when it first showed up in your world, too.
I wasn't transferred- well, I don't think that was the intention. It was done by a telepath and it was very sloppy. What he tried to do was overwrite me with another person's memories and personality- what he accomplished was ripping out various aspects of my personality and implanting them in his own head while he tried to fill the remaining gap with his impressions of someone else. It's a good thing I had the ability to heal or it would've ended up even more of a mess.

It was intolerable, but thankfully I fixed it, eventually.
I have several abilities, actually, as I learned how to copy them from other people. The big ones are regeneration, telekinesis, and my original, intuitive aptitude. But I can also read the memories of objects and shapeshift, among other things.

Originally, my goal was merely to obtain more, become better than I was. I eventually realized that the collection of powers in and of itself didn't necessarily accomplish that.
And yes, it seems I can only copy the abilities of people from my world, those particular genetic enhancements. But I don't do that anymore, anyway. Things get too messy when certain abilities cause feedback for each other.

Were you also transferred into your body, like myself? Or what happened to you?

Mutant powers. What is it, Gabriel, that you can do?

I hope you can copy only these "powers." I would not have someone steal away my mind's advantages.
