Great Titles. (Unlike the title of this post of course)

seriousfic wrote a post the other day about titles. This is the post, by the way. Now, the post is more focused on titles for fanfics, but it did remind me of something I like to think about and wanted to discuss here: AWESOME TITLES ( Read more... )

Is there some bizarre recombination of Doctor Who and Lost going on there?

I own that book, but I haven't read it yet. I like the title, but it only makes sense if you know the "Island of Doctor Death" type of titles that plague crappy pulp.

I gotta go with Blue Beetle #16 in the new series:

"Total Eclipso: The Heart"

Well, that's a reference to a song which actually has a trippy cool title.

I kinda like it, despite that I hate pun titles 99.9999999999% of times.

Second all the Harlan Ellison choices.

"Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" is a pretty good title. I'm not huge on Philip K. Dick, but it's a neat title. The alternate title of Michael Bishop's novel The Secret Ascension is, "Philip K. Dick Is Dead, Alas."

James Tiptree, Jr. had a creepy little story called, "Love Is the Plan the Plan Is Death", the title of which which works pretty well.

Robert Sheckley's, "Can You Feel Anything When I Do This?" is a good title for its story. Not immediately impressive, but having read the story, I think it's perfect. (And that story has interesting use of language in general.)

Salman Rushdie's 'The Satanic Verses' is a great one, and I was kinda disappointed it wasn't about the occult.

Thomas Hardy irritates the hell out of me, but I like how 'Jude the Obscure' rolls off the tongue quite nicely.

And the pulp fiction novels always have some cracking titles: 'The Devil's Mistress', 'Farewell My Lovely'. I'm a sucker for those because they sell the mood so well.

The Body Electric would be a cool name for a band ( ... )

I don't hate lenghty titles, although the longer it gets the clunkier it can get.

No, see, they're strangely attractive but then you have to type them out all the time and you get exasperated with all the capitals :P
