seriousfic wrote a post the other day about titles. This is the post, by the way. Now, the post is more focused on titles for fanfics, but it did remind me of something I like to think about and wanted to discuss here: AWESOME TITLES ( Read more... )

The Body Electric would be a cool name for a band.

Personally I'm a big fan of puntastic titles and fully intend to name a story "Living With Interesting Timing" at some point.

Favourite existing titles... Hmm.

I like titles which list things, like Neil Gaiman's "Snow, Glass, Apples" and Kelly Link's "Carnation, Lily? Lily, Rose?" - both of which are wonderful subtly creepy fantasy short stories that freak you out in an awesome way, by the way.

Speaking of Kelly Link, she does awesome titles (and is, coincidentally, a short story writer by trade). "And Who Will Be Fired Out Of The Cannon?" (I have a weakness for titles beginning with And, as well), "Travels with the Snow Queen," "The Girl Detective"... And how can you not love "Most of my friends are two thirds water"?

(As long as I'm raving about Link I should mention that most of those can be downloaded from her website)

Tangentially, how do you feel about song titles? I have a love hate relationship with lengthy pop-punk titles ("The Only Difference Between A Sentence And A Paragraph Is Ryan Ross Having An Editor" -- someone in fandom) and then there's Brand New's habit of randomly titling songs in Spanish for no reason...

I don't hate lenghty titles, although the longer it gets the clunkier it can get.

No, see, they're strangely attractive but then you have to type them out all the time and you get exasperated with all the capitals :P
