DS9 Rewatch: 1.19

Spoiler warning: assumes knowledge of all seasons.

1.19 - Duet

Plot: A Cardassian suspected of being a war criminal arrives on the station.

I decided to turn on DS9 this morning figuring it would be fun to watch an episode and write a little bit about it so I turned on my DVD and realized that the next one in line was... "Duet". Oh. I keep forgetting that this episode was in the first season.

Dax was a champion window breaker as a kid. This is one of the first time I think we've seen that spark of mischief instead of just serenity.

Knowing what I know now about this episode I can see that Marritza almost smiles when Kira goes to arrest him in the teaser.

This episode didn't need Garak (and didn't have him in it), but I can't help but wonder what differences we would have seen in it had this episode taken place after he was a more regular guest star.

This was a really great episode. Even knowing how the puzzle of who he was didn't diminish it. Marritza was actually more interesting knowing that he was just the filing clerk.

Pretty much all of the really serious "issue" episodes this season have been about Kira.

I really love the Cardassians. They're the most complex and interesting Star Trek race and many of DS9's most interesting characters and plotlines are Cardassian. Many of the Star Trek races are reflections of aspects of humans and don't grow much beyond that. Like many of the races they have core traits that they all share, but the spectrum is wider than it is for say, the Klingons or the Vulcans. This has been true since their introduction in "The Wounded".
