He'd never much liked the taste of blood - at least the amount that'd sprayed on his face at random during that last round on top of the flat-topped arenas had gone well. He swiped the back of one hand across his mouth and grinned wickedly as the announcer, floating and circling the area wreathed in fog-smoke that would take the better part of an hour to clear, declared in a wobbly voice, "Victory to Kuronue! The presumed dead bandit master-thief of the Makai will advance to the finals -"
The rest he didn't bother listening to. The arena itself fascinated him - dozens of towering sky-scraping mushrooms with flat caps, with entire eco-systems flourishing atop each. His was a forest area, which tickled him to no end - so many places to weave illusions and set traps, the poor bastards who'd stayed behind to fight him hadn't stood a chance. Likely they wanted an opportunity to stake a claim on it, 'I defeated the legendary thief Kuronue!' .. but none would, or ever could, not this riff-raff.
He had a bet to keep. He'd have to advance long enough to fight Kurama, then probably drop from the tournament. Like he really wanted that crown anyway. He headed to the edge of the cap and spread his wings, leaping off with a buffeting passing breeze to glide down to the observation deck. He'd agreed to meet that human there after either victory or defeat, and maybe share a pint. Blood-streaked as he was, he had the notion this guy'd seen worse.
