Because I’m a worm

Dude, this is the shiznits.  Free books online.  I know.  How awesome is that?  For a bookworm who spends most of her time in front of a compy and has vowed off the library and is trying to save money, this site is freaking gold.

I stumbled onto it when I was looking up Ayn Rand’s works for a buddy and what do you know?  This site had Anthem up.  Dang.  I hadn’t read that book since I was fourteen.  I read it again and I’m still in awe.  It’s written so simply, but so powerfully too.  As a fellow writer, rereading a classic like that pounds home the fact that good works not only tell a story, but relay a message.

I’ve forgotten about that.  I was so stuck in writing everyone in character and making it all believable and well written that I forgotten such an important thing.  The stories that stuck with me the most were the ones that made me really think.  And stories don’t need to be difficult to read to still be profound.

I don’t know if I’ll ever become that kind of writer, but it’s good to remember that there’s something higher to aspire to than just penning a good tale.

Minna who enjoyed Anthem should also look up Earth Abides by George R. Steward.  It’s not on the site so you’ll have to get a version of the physical copy, but I swear if you pick it up and finish it, you will not regret it.

Btw, the site only has classics and inaugural addresses up, so don’t go looking for the latest by Stephen King, lol.
