Today, for some reason, didn't feel like Monday. It's been a mostly good day - despite that Pluto Class feels very different without Hubert, everything went pretty well - I have a feeling that Joseph is going to suddenly become a lot more extroverted. I hope the stuff I need to decorate the classroom comes tomorrow - I want to get started on that so it can be done, and I'm working on crafts for Pluto to do.
This morning, Clara didn't have her homework in her bag, and even though she at first told me that Ms. Kriss hadn't given it to her, it turned out that she had just left it at home. I was sorting papers on the other side of the classroom and listening to her and Eugene talk about this.
Eugene: Clara, where is your homework?
Clara: I don't know.
Eugene: Hm. Maybe it's at your house?
Clara: I don't think so...**
Eugene: Maybe it's at your grandma's house?
Clara: Why?
Eugene: Did your grandmother take it? Maybe she took it.
Clara: My grandmother didn't take my homework. I think it's at my house.
**This is a phrase I use a lot, and they have picked it up, along with, "Oh my goodness!"
The thing I love about this conversation is that 9 months ago, these kids knew how to say their names - and that was all. And now they speak English almost exclusively, at least for the half of the day that I have them.
The second funny thing that happened today was a bit after, during story time. They really love this book called Zoom! Zoom! Zoom! I'm Off to the Moon by Dan Yaccarino. It's a really cute book and they are always fascinated about it. One of the words that appears in the book that they have asked me about is 'engine', and they brought it up again. I explained that an engine is what makes the car go - if there's no engine, the car won't make the vrooming noise, and can't go.
Ryan thought he understood what I was talking about, and said, "Ms. Rivera, in Korean engine is gireum!" I started to correct him, since that's not quite right, but Clara interrupted me with, "Yes, gireum is car rice!"
Which, while gireum does not mean engine, is entirely correct (although probably, from Asian children, stereotypical) and made me laugh.
So there's our word of the day:
기름 gireum = gas (like you put in a car)
And a bonus word from Universe class, who clarified a question I had about some Korean vowels today.
뇌 nwe = brain
I've been pretty productive tonight, I think, too. My goal is to do at least one finger a night on these gloves, and tonight I did the pinky on the first purple glove. It took me 2 tries to get it right, but I think I have gotten the hang of it, and I am already mentally planning where to add stitches for the rest of the fingers to make them work out properly. I've also gone through a chuck of the recent billboard 100 and have been mostly disappointed (you're not surprised? ^_~), but found a couple good things. I'm also filling in gaps where my previous hard drive ate things... It's slowly going. But now, I need to go to bed.
For your listening pleasure, my latest obsession... "Airplanes" by B.o.B feat Hayley Williams. I love melodic hip pop.
