Sorry fellow Whovians, It's not what you think...
You get PURE SOLID GOLD, right?!? WRONG.
What happened?!?
Jaoquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman's performances are both miraculous. Intense, full of a thousand layers. Amy Adams plays a part we usually don't see from her and it's hard for a great comedienne to do the drama switch and show her full range before she is pigeon holed and type-cast forever. And while it doesn't EXACTLY -say- Scientology, or this character is based on that charlatan, L. Ron Hubberd, it doesn't have to. It is obvious as soon as we meet *that* character what this is about, although they take way too long getting there and devolving a character that Phoenix could do little with in the first half hour.
When I first heard the list of actors and subject matter, I KNEW this was going to blow my socks off. (The only thing better would have been if Travolta, Tom Cruise, and Kirsty Alley played the leads. LOL). Just the trailers made me...oh...how do I say this delicately?? WET IN THE PANTIES!!
But it was just awful. So fucking awful. The timing. The lines. The plot. Pretty much everything but the performances and the parts that showed what an F-ing CROCK "scientology" is.
It was SOOOO bad that when the credits rolled, Yearrrgsworth and I asked each other "which of us gets to slam this?!?"
He really wanted to, but said "Ugh, but I am so far behind..I haven't even done my review about how great "Argo" was and how it should be seen by anyone that comes across it".
I told him not to worry about 'getting behind', people know the four of us are busy, Y. with work/school, Xim with his family, R. is new (and a perfect fit so far I believe as the last review shows) so you guys with busy lives would understand if he was 'behind' with a busy life and if he wanted to SLAM "The Master" more pressingly than praise "Argo", to go for it!!
So he will either, A) come in to this post soon and EDIT in -his- critique, or B) make a whole new post about it from his Point of View. We didn't think you would mind =)
If you saw it and loved it, please, feel free to say so, you don't have to only comment when you agree with us. But I don't know about R. or Xim, but for Y. and myself...well..we have four thumbs and they all point down for "The Master". I think Yearrrgsworth may have given it a Bronx cheer while I thumbed my nose at the very DVD case ;)
That's my story, and I am sticking to it!!
