BFI Event/Watson's Trousers

Had lots of fun over the weekend! when I should have been working on my dissertation On Saturday we watched the first episode of the Russian Sherlock Holmes which was hilarious! Watson spends the whole first half of the ep thinking that Holmes is an evil evil criminal and hiding in his room with all his blankets pulled up. So adorable! The music was unbelievably bad. They seemed to think it was a good idea to play random drums whenever anything vaguely creepy was happening. The costumes and acting were actually very good. We were particularly taken with Watson's tight brown trousers. If you're interested check out this vid which has scenes from The Final Problem. Also, you can see Watson crying over Holmes's death and Holmes holding him! (Not that I'm obsessed or anything.) XD

Sunday was the BFI Merlin event, which was awesome! We saw the first two eps of series 3 on the big screen, put together as one feature-length event. It was actually the same theater we saw Star Trek II in a while back. It was really fun seeing the season opening screened like it was a movie with lots of other fans. It didn't hurt that it actually was really epic.

The main plotline involved Evil!Morgana. Now, I was a bit conflicted over Evil!Morgana. On the one hand - UBER HOT, and I really enjoy seeing her not being passive and having a headache all the time, on the other hand, it seemed completely out of character. The truth is, what Morgana and Morgause are doing is not exactly a bad thing. Uther more than deserves it. I just have a hard time believing that Morgana can overlook her friendships with everyone at Camelot without feeling at all conflicted. And from what Katie said at the panel, it seems that she was directed to play it that way. Just 'be evil' with no other direction. NOT COOL MERLIN PRODUCTION TEAM, NOT COOL. Not that I should really expect any better from them based on series 2, but still.

Other than that I really enjoyed the premiere! Very epic feel that was kind of LoTR Two Towersish, with the attempted takeover of the castle, and Merlin getting stung in a scene that was very reminiscent of Shelob stinging Frodo. The Merlin/Arthur bickering was adorable and back to series one standards. Gwen didn't have much to do, but she was still awesome. I enjoyed seeing so much of Uther's crying face, and Gaius taking care of him. Also, the dripping kids were extremely creepy and Morgana and Merlin actually got to swordfight!

I am looking forward to seeing Morgana be the 'big bad' and trying to sabotage stuff behind the scenes. She's certainly in a good position to do so. I just wish she was doing it with more of a purpose besides 'being evil,' and was a bit less one-dimensional about it.

I also enjoyed the panel, which had all six of the cast members. It was my first time seeing Anthony Head and Richard Wilson in person, so that was fun. Unfortunately, we could only take pictures for about five minutes so I didn't get much, but here they are.

Bradley was looking really really not into the whole panel thing. Colin seemed cheerful, though (even if he doesn't look it in any of my pics) XD -

The boys with Richard Wilson, who was extremely adorable -

The girls looking pretty as always. Katie had on a very short skirt, but sadly no glasses -

The only pic I managed to get of Anthony Head since the host guy was completely blocking him -

Afterwards we went with the Merlin group to a pub to do the usual meet-up thing. It was nice because there were more people there than usual thanks to the event. Our little Lee got into a bit of trouble though. He stole multiclassgeek's phone and was looking up tentacle porn! (Notice his guilty expression.)

So overall a great weekend and now I am off to try to finish the dissertation. I have to send it away for binding at the end of this week so I actually have to start finishing things up and committing to things now. Kind of scary, but I am looking forward to it being OVER!! Then I can start getting serious about job hunting. Money would be a very good thing.
