Digital cameras have bamboozled me for years. Their ideas about focus and the delay in the shutter work orthogonally to my own. And I do not think I ever made a real attempt to use a video camera,
But....
I am 2/3 through the intro workshops on documentary production at Lawrence. These are not your household cameras. WOW! From bubble levels in the tripods to adjusting the gain for light to color temperature adjustments to "peek" and "zebra" focus and light checks, I could use one of these at home. Ah yes, another thing to be very slow at as I try to do all the various bits without the Emmy winners at my back. Film commentary often refers to the hours spent lighting a scene - I can now empathize for I am even slower in moving theory into practice. It makes so much more sense in my head than out in the world. Hard, soft, key, fill, bounce, rifa, tota - new vocabulary even as I reviewed concepts from photography from years ago.
