It is a somewhat idle thought, but I wonder if the lack of substantial wildlife outside the city walls means anything? I cannot seem to recall having seen any animals -- save a bird, once. The city itself has been established as abandoned, but -- under natural circumstances, the fields and forest should not have been affected, I think

This place is really damn weird. But, even a battle shouldn't have wiped the wildlife. They're usually smarter than that to get caught in it and would return when the danger was over...

That is certainly true, which is why I wonder whether the cause of the city's abandonment was something other than a battle -- perhaps a natural disaster of some sort?
