It is a somewhat idle thought, but I wonder if the lack of substantial wildlife outside the city walls means anything? I cannot seem to recall having seen any animals -- save a bird, once. The city itself has been established as abandoned, but -- under natural circumstances, the fields and forest should not have been affected, I think.

The battle remains outside -- perhaps the destruction was not limited only to the people who used to exist here.
