Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong. ~Richard Armour
The Ultimate Question: After the May 15 Elections, did our country become a better place or not? It’s too early to tell.
Most of the people in place are from the opposition. Will these people be better than the administration? It’s hard to say. Most of them seem trustworthy… worthy of the votes that were casted for them. But don’t most of the politicians in place start that way? They all come in nice packages-with glittering wraps of promises and agendas… only to end up empty in the long run.
I could say that the elections this year was one of the most peaceful and orderly in the history. I mean, we cannot take off the fact that a lot of people died and that a lot of poll watchers did not get paid because their candidate lost… but I guess that’s all part of the game. But after this opportunity given to the people, will the letters formed from the ink on the ballots be worth it? Will they do justice to people’s trust in them? I hope so. I really do.
Yesterday, we celebrated Makati Day. It also served as (probably) Mayor Binay’s victory party. Would you believe that everyone from his party won? Yes, all 11 of them… from the Mayor down to the Councilors. You may be thinking… “Well… Binay may have pulled some strings on this one… as he always does.” Isn’t that always the case? I said we had a peaceful election. I didn’t mention anything about having a clean one. We never had. I don’t know if we’d have one anytime in the future.
Just like the election itself, the celebration wasn’t clean. In a different sense, that is. The whole of Ayala Avenue was cluttered with millions, probably billions, of paper which they passed as confetti. It was flying all over the place, cluttering the streets and even the lobby of certain buildings and establishments.
Our country deserves to be a better place to live in. we are not a people originally designed just to be immigrants in alien lands. This is where we were born and although it is tempting to just up and leave and be someplace better, this is our inheritance. We, the one’s who voted already did our part. I’m just hoping that we voted the right persons… not just because we know them, our friend’s friends know them… not just because they are famous or rich… and certainly not because they gave us money. Now it’s their turn to prove the people that they are worth it. Yes, we still have a chance to be more than just a third-world country.
I’m hoping that the people we had elected to their respective places and positions won’t end up like confetti. Some would say that it’s useless to hope but I’m still hoping and praying that they don’t end up like torn paper cluttering this country… a useless eyesore that seems nice while fluttering in the air… I hope they don’t end up being some meticulously cut out shining-shimmering-splendid trash left for someone else to clean up.
Take our politicians: they're a bunch of yo-yos. The presidency is now a cross between a popularity contest and a high school debate, with an encyclopedia of cliches the first prize. ~Saul Bellow
