Christina doesn't plan to celebrate this Christmas.
She knows she can't get anything she wants.
She can't want to be a surgeon again, can't long for the feeling of blood and skin and tissue, life and death, under her nails and between her fingertips. She can't unhear the sound of gunshots, reverberating off hallways that were once so white and pristine, can't bring a baby back to her best friend (a status she's not even sure of anymore, the one thing she always knew for certain), or bring breath back to those people she didn't even like, not ever really, but that never meant she wanted them to die.
She knows all this, just like she knows there is a wedding ring on her finger, just like she knows Owen is waiting in the next room, that he wants a Christmas tree and lights and shiny wrapped presents and for her to laugh and believe in Santa Claus, not just for tonight, but for all nights.
Instead, she puts a stamp on an envelope she will never attach her return address to, seals inside the blank Christmas card, addresses it to Dr. Preston Burke, then slips it under a pile of bills.
