How can he still be so happy? Chinen watched the boy whom he had once meant the world to laugh with his new friends. Chinen felt his heart clench. How can he not feel the way I feel?
He had tried to push these emotions away. He had tried to prevent his mind from wandering to dangerous places, to prevent him from thinking about this new cruel reality. He wanted to tear his eyes away from the sight that was only succeeding in making him more miserable than he had previously been. He wanted to return to his prior delusion that Yamada was hurting as much as he was. It was a selfish thought, he knew, but he couldn't keep himself from wanting it.
The boy's laugh, his voice, his presence, all the things that had once filled Chinen with such joy now only brought him pain. Coming so close to something that he could never and would never have again was unbearable.
"Chii~"
Chinen turned in the direction of the voice, shifting his gaze from the object of his affection and the cause of his pain to his friend. "Hm?"
"Do you know one of those guys, Chii?" Ryutaro was looking in the direction Chinen had been staring at before.
Chinen plastered his usual cheerful smile onto his face, "Nope. Just staring off into space, I guess." He gave Ryutaro a sheepish look and started bouncing away, humming to himself. Staring into the space next to him that I used to fill.
Is it bad to feel upset that the one you love is happy without you?
