Happy Endings is a short story that I really enjoyed. It is actually one of my papers on this. It is made up of six different parts of a story. She tries to tell us that no matter how we write a story, in the end, John and Mary will die. There is nothing anyone can do about it everyone is going to have to die someday right? Many love stories end with the two main characters living happily ever after, but Atwood says that it can only end one way. The only way to keep the story interesting is with the beginning and the middle. In all six of her stories it has the same character but the beginning and the middle of their lives is different. Atwood wants us to realize that we need to focus on the middle and the beginning because the end is the same. She is telling us that we have to live our lives to the fullest and we should hold things back. It is really interesting all the different scenarios like the second story where Mary falls for John but John doesn’t Fall for her and she ends up killing herself hoping that he would come and save her, but he never did. I know that it is wrong but I thought she was dumb and desperate for that one. The third story kind of freaked me out because this does happen in real life. John falls in love with Mary, but Mary is younger and she only spends time with john because the guy she really likes is not really ready to settle down. In the end John end up buying a gun and killing Mary and James and then killing himself. Well that’s quite depressing.
