Last night Linda and I saw
King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. This is ostensibly a film about a family man from Washington state attempting to beat the World Record Highest Score for Donkey Kong. It's not. It's actually a film about getting sucked into downward spirals of insanely crazy passive aggressive behavior... and Donkey Kong.
I had read several reviews before seeing the film that commented on the stranger-than-fiction plot twists and broad characters. But really, nothing can prepare you. I had to keep reminding myself this was a documentary. I'm pretty sure the producers had to do the same.
There is definitely a large amount of editor's bias in the way the movie is put together, but really there is only so much you can do with editing. These characters, I mean these people, are intensely archetypical and while the editing certainly flattens them a bit, you really get the feeling that at their cores these people are the characters portrayed on the screen.
If it is playing near you, I would highly recommend checking it out -- you don't even have to like video games. If you have a LiveJournal or attended high school, you have experienced enough to empathize with these people and situations.
