CHAPTER 1

April 09, 1993

“I have grown up yet I still desire the warmth of my mother and the tender kindness of my father. Despite this unquenchable thirst and ungratifiable feelings, I will live the life I’ve always dreamt of with the family I chose to nurture and love.”

-        Kim Jongsun

It was a wonderful evening ahead for a certain family residing in the provincial side of Gyeongsangnam-do. Having been fortunate to build a new company from scratch Mr. Kim Jongsun enjoys the luxuries of a prestigious life together with his loved ones. Tonight marks the fifth year anniversary of the company and a party will be held in the city of Busan.

Hurrying down the staircase in a stunning long, turqoise gown is the beautiful *Mrs. Kim(Oh) Minah with one of her sons Kim Junho in hand. Finally landing on flat ground, Mrs. Kim immediately faces the grinning eight-year-old and fixes his bowtie before facing the mirror.

“Sweetie, is Junsu already with Appa?” Mrs. Kim asks Junho as she checks her hair in the mirror above a wall table a few steps away from the stairs.

“Hmm… I think baby Su is still in his room reading comics,” said Junho as he stared at his mother, fascinated by how pretty she was.

Growing quite frantic, Mrs. Kim ushers her son to go on and look for his dad outside so he can get inside the vehicle but was soon stopped by the child who faced her with a serious face. “Eomma…”

“Yes dear?”

“You look like a very pretty flower.” Junho gave her a smile, turned on his heel and walked off to look for his daddy.

Charmed by her eldest, Mrs. Kim chuckled to herself and started to gather the blazers of the children.

“Come on, Junsu! We’ll be late for the party!” Mrs. Kim shouted near the stairs and heard some rustling before seeing a hurrying tyke. “Junsu baby please don’t run! Slow steps Junsu, slow steps!”

A barely six-year-old Junsu rockets down the stairs, clashes to his mom, and gives her a tight hug by the legs. A big and toothy grin escapes the child’s mouth as he looks up to his mother’s face. “I’m here mommy!!! I’m here!” Junsu cheerfully says while still embracing the legs of his mom.

Realizing that Junsu won’t let go, Mrs. Kim decided to just carry Junsu to the vehicle and meet with her husband. Reaching the sleak limousine they’ll be using, she sees Mr. Kim who was laughing with Junho by the car door.

“Dear come on now, we’ll be late for the party! I don’t want to miss seeing the others.” Mrs. Kim has already entered the limousine even before the three boys did.

“Love, they won’t be anywhere else except the party,” a chuckling Mr. Kim said as he got in with the boys.

“But Jongsun-ah, it’s been months since we all last seen each other!”

“Oh well, I pretty much think you just want to be reunited with the ladies and catch up on the recent gossip,” Mr. Kim teased and side glanced at the boys while sniggering. The two tykes snicker together with their dad while Mrs. Kim pouts at them. Though they often tease her, this woman knows how great her love is for the three boys of her life.

------------

The vehicle drove off, away from the house and towards the destination they all expect to reach. It was a cold, windy night, the moon was shining brightly, and the stars were twinkling ever so gently. The roads were wet and slippery so the driver was cautiously slowing down to avoid any accidents along the way, but a skidding motorcycle heading their way was something unexpected and caught the driver by surprise a second too late.

The driver swerved and avoided the motorcycle successfully but the slippery road prevented the man to control the vehicle’s direction. The limousine that carried a happy family was unsteadily heading to an approaching truck that was flashing its lights, but to no avail. The brakes were useless at that time as shock registered in both drivers.

“It was like I was dreaming, and I was in euphoria. I got the feeling that I had to hold my sons’ little hands but I didn’t know why. And then I looked at my wife feeling so enamored and right that moment I knew, I lived a life better than the rest of the world.”

-        Kim Jongsun

It was too late to change their fates as joy was instantly replaced by horror on the faces of a beautiful family. Both man and woman shielded their little angels with their whole being, whole heart, and whole presence as they collided with the truck. The limousine was sent flying and one by one the souls were taken ever so abruptly, tearing it away from the bodies of good people. Except one. It was a miracle that a young boy was saved by the bodies that warmly wrapped around him. The medical staff that arrived minutes after the accident secured the unconscious boy and was brought to the hospital. Pity has gone through the system of all the living beings that realized the bitter reality that is to come to the poor little angel yet all they could do was to do their jobs and clean up the mess.

April 16, 1993

The sun has met the horizon and the sky is painted with oranges and hues of blue as the final day has come for the dead to be buried. Staring blankly by the hill is a lonely boy that held nothing on his face except the little scratches and bandages that covered his frail body. Wearing a suit reminded him of that night but that was it. The shock had been too much and everything has not yet sunk in his mind, but little Junsu remained strong for people were watching him intently with a particular emotion that made him want to crawl beneath the ground. Sympathy.

Pity.

He didn’t understand what those emotions were yet it made him feel lost in the vastness of anything and everything. But little Junsu couldn’t do anything except to stare at the sun rising slowly, as if it wanted the world to embrace its warmth little by little until it can shine its brightest.

A man came towards the child, together with a few people. Standing next to Junsu, the man too stared at the sun for a few while basking at the warmth it brought despite the chilly wind. The said man faced Junsu and crouched so that he’ll be in eye level with the child.

“Junsu…” The man said while gently grasping the lower arm of the child. Junsu faced the elder but said nothing and blankly stared.

“Junsu-yah, I’m from the Park family. I’m one of your parents’ best buddies.” The man urged on with a small smile and waited for a while before recognizing a spark of hope and relief that shined across Junsu’s eyes for a second. “I promised your appa that if ever something happens, I’ll take good care of you. Is that alright Junsu-yah?” Mr. Park gazed at the child, thinking how young Junsu was for him to experience such loss.

“… “

Silence streched for a few seconds and Junsu said nothing but nodded in return. His features softened and looked so much more of a young lad. Holding a soft smile, Mr. Park took hold of both Junsu’s hands and looked directly into his eyes.

“You can call me Uncle Tae Jin… “ The rest of the people standing near the scene were introduced one by one, belonging to the Kim family, the Shim family, and the Jung family. And at that moment, the Parks have agreed to take custody of the child and love him like their own.

“Minah-yah, Jongsun-ah, I promise with all my heart to take good care of Junsu. I swear by my life that I will never let Junsu get hurt. Never will he lose a family again. He will have Yoochun. He will have me.”

-        Park Tae Jin

------------

Junsu was left alone for a moment in order to privately discuss the legalities that were needed to be cleared. Junsu felt so alone yet again but was suddenly approached by four kids pretty much near his age.

A boy who was two inches taller than Junsu walked closer to him and gave him a warm smile. “Hi, my name is Yoochun. What’s yours?”

“… “

“Umm… hyung, isn’t he the one with the dead parents?” a boy holding a lollipop frankly butted in, causing the other three to glare at him. “Whaaaat?”

“Oh shush your mouth Minnie.” A pretty boy snarkily spoke as he gave the younger an irritated look. “Ignore Changmin. He’s such a big meanie sometimes even though he’s the youngest. I’m Jaejoongie by the way. But I think I’m older so you can call me hyung!”

The last boy who was as tall as Yoochun smiled at Junsu and waved. “My name’s Yunho. I’m the same age as Jaejoong so you can call me hyung too!”

“Wait. How do you guys know if he gets to call you both hyung if you don’t even know his name and his age?” butted an amused Yoochun who questioned the two.

“Well, he is smaller than you and me and Yunnie,” Jaejoong remarked. And four friends ended up arguing about who was to be called ‘hyung’ while a certain little boy just watched them bark at each other.

Junsu had felt the welcoming atmosphere when the four boys approached him. He felt comfortable, present, and alive. He knew he wanted to be part of the group and join the argument too, be friends and be happy again. He then gathered his strength and courage, held a small smile, and walked a bit closer to the battling boys.

“… Umm, my name is Junsu and I’m six years old.” The noise suddenly halted when the four heard a barely-there voice of someone introducing himself. They all stared at Junsu and smiled at him with so much glee, as if rewarded with all the bags of candy in the world.

“Finally, he talks! Oh and Yoochun hyung, he does get to call Joongie hyung and Yunnie hyung ‘hyung’,” Changmin said with confidence as he stuck his tongue out at Yoochun.

Yoochun paid no attention to Changmin as he admired how beautiful Junsu looked with a smile, with the light behind him making him glow, with that extra shimmer in his eyes, and with that blush that made Junsu’s skin look warm to the touch.

Little Jaejoong and little Yunho liked the way Junsu looked, like a little brother they could coddle and protect. Young Yoochun fully accepted the idea that Junsu’ll be the best-est friend he’ll ever have. Evil Changmin however, thought that Junsu could be the greatest victim of his pranks and experiments.

And Junsu, well, Junsu now considers these people as his new family - the family that he will forever have.

Extending a hand for Junsu to take, Yoochun patiently waits as the others stood behind him all showing such welcoming smiles.

“So, you wanna be friends?”

“I’m not lonely now. I have them. Right, eomma? Right, appa? Junho hyung, I have new friends, see? I’m not lonely anymore. I’m not alone.”

* I put Oh as one of Mrs. Kim's last names because my korean friends explained to me that when a korean woman marries, she does not take the last name of the husband but the children do :D
