Kay has been left at home with her daddy all this week while i taught, because of some careless mom in our playgroup who thought it was okay to bring in a feverish child who ended up having hand foot and mouth disease...
on Monday, we had our usual playgroup get together. for those of you who don't know, our playgroup is more like a class where the moms are there to teach the kids things like songs and dances to
three-character classics. we had a lot of people there that Monday, and one of the moms that was teaching that day came with her two kids, one of which was running a fever. the mom explained that her little girl had a fever because of an immunization shot she had earlier, so no one thought very much about it. i was still kinda wondering why she would even take her out if she was feverish, but i figured it's because she was suppose to teach the kids shapes and colors that day. :/
when we got back, i got an email titled "a thousand appologies" from that mom saying that her kids have contracted some form of
enterovirus, that is now (after 5 days) caused both her kids to have
hand foot and mouth disease. you should have SEEN the look on my face when i read that! even if enteroviruses are quite common in Taipei and can have cold like symptoms, it is in no way something to overlook. it can kill a baby and is very dangerous for toddlers under the age of 2. :(
so after breaking the news to my hubby, he immediately started to devise a plan (i could imagine the flowchart he was making in his head with two outcomes at the bottom: complete recovery or death ~_~;;). since some of the kids i tutor have siblings that are not yet 2 (one of them being a NEWBORN), we knew Kay couldn't come near ANY of them, so i ended up teaching this week without Kay. as far as me giving the virus to the family would be less of a possibility because an enterovirus doesn't do well against an adult's immune system. :) i didn't tell any of my clients about what Kay had, and i'm glad i didn't because i'm sure they'd be as freaked out as i was.
it's also a good thing i didn't take her, because she started having diarrhea on Tuesday, which is one of the symptoms, so daddy's plan went into immediate affect. Kay's ped said that until she shows other symptoms, he wouldn't be able to tell which one of the enteroviruses Kay had caught, so hubby and i took care to keep a close eye on her hands, feet and mouth. since its incubation period is 3-7 days, we just had to wait it out and see if anything happened. :(
fortunately, she hasn't shown any other symptoms except her diarrhea and even that is getting better, so here's hoping that she was able to dodge a bullet this time. unfortunately, a couple of other kids from our playgroup weren't as lucky, so they've canceled next week's class. since it's June and the peak season for the enterovirus, we're not out of the woods yet.
however, she did have a good time at home with her daddy this week :)
