History: I Knows It. Sorta.

Since
roadrunnertwice mentioned the webcomic The Battle of Dovecote Crest, it kind of kick-started my brain into gear. I have a strange array of facts in my head regarding the American Civil War, and due to the fact that I went to college for five years across the Potomac from the Antietam National Battlefield, I have no small amount of abhorrence for Civil War related things. Nota Bene: DO NOT GET ME STARTED ABOUT THAT FUCKING POSTER.

But the mishmash of facts in my head make me wonder if there isn't a niche of steampunk culture that hasn't just up and run with it? Think. First widespread use of modern era metal-plated warships (ironclads!). First use of arsenic to preserve battlefield corpses (mad science!!). Lots of soldiers with amputated limbs, necessitating developments in prosthetics (robot arms!!!) The race between the Pony Express (orphans preferred) and the lightning fingers of the telegraph. Heck, Verne himself began The Mysterious Island with an aeronautic piracy gone awry in the midst of a battle at Richmond.

I can't imagine that this hasn't been done somewhere in the steampunk subculture.

(Do I have any interest in it? Well, no. Not really. But it should be done, just to have the idea executed. In fact, I dare you to make me like it.)

. . .

Then again, it's been that kind of a day for ideas. A hat ambushed me just after I woke up, and demanded that I make it-commissions or no commissions. I am having a love/hate moment with my muse.
