I hope you read Aaron Corbin's column on his Website. I agree with what he said. Sure, "Midwest Pro Wrestling" was the promotion running the show Tuesday at First Avenue, but it doesn't feel like MPW.
I agree that MPW is dead. MPW -- with its weekly shows and great ongoing storylines, is no more ... and the show at First Avenue is NOT MPW... it's just another promotion using that name.
Was it a good show? Yes, without a doubt. But was it an 'MPW' show? No. Those days are over.
Ok, moving on:
Joe & Becca & myself arrived just before 8 p.m., and I'm pleased to see such a long line of people waiting to get in.
Once inside, I immediately went up to Corey-the-milkman, and shook his hand; we buried the hatchet, and I can't express how important that is to me. Corey & Ryan are genuinely good guys. While we won't be traveling together again... I have no ill will toward either of them. Hey, when you are traveling together for 47 consecutive hours... it's easy for bad feelings to quickly develop! So, I felt good after talking with Corey, and I look forward to chatting with those two at future wrestling shows.
Lot of wrestlers in the crowd tonight, too. When I looked around, I thought there easily could have been nine matches or so on this show! Sadly, no Mason Quinn here, and he was missed. It's been wayyyy too long since I'd seen Paradise wrestle, and he always is solid, and the bar crowds are into his work.
The lowlight was definitely the women's match. Lisa has acknowledged over on her Live Journal that she hasn't wrestled much lately. Sadly, I think it showed. The match just wasn't as crisp as their prior match. Rain was great as always, although I didn't know she was a face at First Avenue!
I spoke with some people after the show who were frustrated that Jimmy Jacobs wasn't better received. Well... bar crowds are different. They just are. I'm not saying, better, or worse, just different. This crowd doesn't know Jimmy Jacobs. Most of the 250 people at this show hadn't seen him in MPW, ROH, Chikara, NWA-No Limits or IWA-Mid South. All things considered, I think Jacobs had to be happy with the reception he got. Sure, it was less than when he debuts in front of a tape-buying 'smart' crowd (and I hate that term), but it was a solid reaction.
Dos has the size and the look to be a really good wrestler. Like Lisa, however, he needs to increase the number of matches he has each month to stay polished. I've always been a big fan of Dos, and I honestly don't know why Eli doesn't use him anymore.
It's Friday, so I'm off to a Twins game tonight, then to NIW on Saturday. If the weather is good on Monday (my big 32nd birthday!), I'll head to the State Fair to see Switchfoot.
Yes, gas prices suck, and it will cut into my indy shows, but this weekend, I'm still Cities-bound.
