Don't be afraid to haggle-if the place looks good, but slightly pricier than you wanted- say something like "gee i like the energy, but the cost is a little tight (look at your watch) I am supposed to look at another apartment at (insert a time one 1/2 hour from the time you are at)-however if I can get this place for X amount, I can just go over the logistics with you now-I can get you a money order right up the street today and be done with this. And remind them of your occupation-since you work in collections, then you already understand the value of a good score, it gives you credibility. Sometimes offering to help with the landscaping or shoveling in winter, yard maintenance for a lower rental works wonders. Bring your reference letters-even if it's your friends writing them-saying you are a neat, quiet organized person who values a clean environment. :) Hand them to them casually while you are looking around. Act confident-like you have 12 more appealing locations to look at that day, and getting the apartment is something you want out of the way. Scoring an apartment at a great price is a huge ego boost :) Just sharing some of my experiences.
