Do you ever write any scenes that are really just about character development? I just wrote a whole big scene, about three pages, where the point was learning something we didn't previously know about a character.Something out of character for that, uh, character, but it is revealing.
It doesn't have much to do with the plot - as far as I know, anyway - but it does lead into another major plot point. And I'm wondering if it really belongs, or if I should cut it out. I could probably get rid of it, but then we won't know this thing about this character, and I want readers too. Because I didn't know it until I thought of it, and the other characters didn't know either. Is merely "adding layers to a character" ok? I don't think the scene stops the story, because it's pretty quick and then we move onto the next thing. Sigh. I hate waffling back and forth like this. Do you mind a little detour if it's interesting?
I'll probably just plow ahead, leave it in until I'm done the first draft, at least, to see how it plays out. I'm just wondering what other people think.
