Operation Holiday Card

Dec 03, 2006 10:14

I'd like to take a moment to urge all my fellow Americans to send some cards to soldiers this Christmas season. They are living far away from home. Many have families. Many are probably homesick for home. It's a simple gesture that could mean a lot to a lonely soldier. I know this is an unpopular war, and I'd like nothing more than to see our ( Read more... )

Thanks. I hope people are inspired to let our soldiers know that they are in our thoughts and prayers as well.

It's easy to forget just how young some soldiers are, little more than kids - and how far away home must seem, particularly at a festive season when we think of family and coming together.

So thank you for this reminder.

And perhaps I could also mention that there are also British troops in a similar situation.

To send a card to a British serviceman or woman, the address is:

British Soldier,

G1 Branch,

HQ Multi-National Division (SE)

Basra

Iraq

BFPO 641

or

British Soldier

G1 Branch

HQ Helmand Province Taskforce

Camp Bastion

Afghanistan

BFPO 792

I agree that this suggestion has nothing to do with the rights and wrongs of the war. It's about remembering the loneliness someone may feel in a difficult and dangerous situation, far from home.

Thank you for posting this. I've been wondering where I can send cards to.

Not trying to debate the Christmas/Holiday thing, but is it okay/legal to send a card that says "Merry Christmas" on it? Last year I had a gift basket sent to Iraq and the company I bought it from wouldn't allow any religious slogans to be sent with the gifts. If not, I'll send non-religious cards instead.

Good question. I don't really know for sure, but I would make the cards general holiday cards just in case.
