Does anyone else get REALLY TICKED OFF when people you think are intelligent - or who should be intelligent - use atrocious grammar? One of my pet peeves is when people say, "The thing is, is we did so-and-so."
Is is? Why do people say is is? I heard it today on NPR!! Aaarrgh! I love NPR, but that made my esteem for them wobble.
The other thing that really irks me is when professionals say, "We had went to such-and-such a place." My friend is a High School teacher, and she hears her colleagues use this construction (destruction is more like it) ALL the time. What?
DID NO ONE RECEIVE LESSONS IN BASIC VERB TENSES???
I realize I'm not perfect. I'm not concise. I use far too many exclamation points!!!! I don't always get my commas right.
But I don't use apostrophes to indicate plural "noun's." I don't use 'went' in a perfect tense construction. And I don't say is is.
TELL ME I'm not alone here. Grrrrr.
