My birthday this year was really wonderful, thank you everyone! 23 feels incredibly old, but at least my birthday was really fun!
On Friday, I made a reservation for 12 at 8:00 at Bistro for dinner with friends. We were about 30 minutes late so we had to wait for over an hour for a table...lame! I was annoyed. But it was nice when we finally sat down and ate. It was great to see everybody. Also, Spoon made me a giant dinosaur cake - it was epic.
Then we walked over to Sogas, but someone had reserved it for dinner so when we walked in, those people were just leaving. It was kind of dumb, but after awhile the DJ set up and a line formed outside, so I was actually glad we got there kind of early. Then lots more friends came by and we danced and got drunk and it was wonderful!
Spoon and Fork stayed at my house overnight and the next morningish we went to Farmers Market and ate free samples. And Tish and I bought apple juice. I think I'm going to go there more often and actually buy fruit and veggies since everything is fresh and cheap, and I think it's probably the grown-up thing to do. Probably 23 year olds go to the Farmers Market. And Davis' farmers market is really fun. Then we went to Cafe Mediterranean for lunch. Never been there before, I had a beef shawarma...it was ok. I like Sam's better.
Afterwards, I came home, took a shower, Alicia came over for a little while...then it was time for the Campus Unions Programs pool party at Theresa's house! It was very fun since my favorites were there and the Art Gallery staff kept to themselves, haha. Lauren made me a dinosaur cake as well, and it was DELICIOUS! Then I went downtown and watched "Knocked Up" with Spoon - soo good! I laughed really hard in it. I highly recommend it!
We came home and I left a couple hours later to go to a house party/bars with Anne and her friends. The house party was dumb because the keg was empty by the time we got there, so we went to Froggy's. I had forgotten how fun that place can be, the atmosphere is so much better than Sogas in many respects. I don't feel like I'm being judged every five minutes. And also, everyone was buying me shots, which isn't really my style, but damn Scooby Snacks are good! Oh man.
Since we got to Froggy's at around midnight, I wasn't ready to go when they called last call at 1:30 (WTF?) so we went to Pita Pit for delicious pitas (for some reason I thought it'd be great to have a ham and dijon mustard pita - I was very drunk) and then went to Suegol and Mandy's house. I just sat on the couch and drunkenly laughed at everything - love those people! Anyway, it was 4 am before we knew it, so we left and I got back at around 5 am.
Then this morning my parents called me to wish me a happy birthday. Yeah. Here's a taste of that lovely conversation:
Dad: "Happy birthday!"
Me: "You're a day late."
Dad: [Pause] "Here's your mother."
Mom: "Happy birthday! What did you do?"
Me: [Silence]
Mom: "Are you mad or something?"
Me: "Well, my feelings are hurt because you forgot my birthday."
Mom: "We forgot what day it was. Did you get our present?"
Then commences about five minutes where they talk about how they overnighted it, how it must have come, etc. It's typical of my parents that instead of addressing an issue, they overlook it and try to make me feel better by giving me something, or by changing the subject and fighting with each other.
Finally, my mom says, "Well, we're only a day late on wishing you a happy birthday, calm down." My dad gets on the phone and says he'll be sure to check in on the situation with my birthday present, he'll call DHL and get back to me, he's very frustrated by DHL/my apartment manager/my roommate. I say, "Well, I don't really care about the present, I care that you guys forgot my birthday." He says, "Well, I'm sorry" and hangs up the phone.
What's done is done, and I'm reasonable about this situation. I've forgotten birthdays before and of course I don't expect my parents to be perfect. It does hurt my feelings that they forgot my birthday, but I think it's far worse that they tried to pass it off as nothing, that they tried to get away with it, thinking I wouldn't care. Oh well.
Really though, my birthday was so fun. I was so happy this whole weekend, thanks to everyone. And the birthday presents I got were hilarious, thank you guys!
Now I have to try to finish three essays, read like four books, and take two finals, and I'll be done with college. Fucking insane.
