"You're my very best friend, Christian"
"And you're mine too, Steve"
"And we'll always be friends, forever"
"Yeah, forever"

After the initial break up of Kane Steve had thought that they would grow apart, that Christian's new friends would steal him away to Nashville and turn him into a star - turned out that Chris didn't fit into the neat pigeon hole they wanted to put him into and he remained stubborn and wanted to be in control of his own work. Steve was proud that the boy stuck to his guns and didn't sell out for the wider appeal they wanted him to have. Christian might have a reputation as a stubborn asshole, but Steve saw it as determination not belligerence.

There were times when things got harder, when the stubbornness seemed to get in his way and for a moment Steve thought Christian might lose his dream. The record contract fell through, the short-lived return to Angel was not as Christian had hoped and the acting work dried up for a moment. Christian persevered, joking that even if he had to go back to playing for tips at least he would be doing what he loved.

The perseverence meant that he prevailed and finally started to get the success he deserved on his own terms. The part of Elliot came along and Christian had control of his music.

Chris' insecurities showed in a number of ways and part of that was his wonder at his success and in not understanding how Steve had stayed and supported Christian through it all.

One night, after the guitars were put away and they had shared too much Jack Christian called him on it.

"Why do you put up with me?" Chris asked, turning to look at Steve.

Steve, for all his reputation as enlightened, hated to talk about his feelings but knew Chris needed to hear this. With a sigh, he spoke quietly.

"You're my very best friend, Christian,"

"And you're mine too, Steve." Chris replied honestly. "And we'll always be friends; Forever."

Steve smiled, Christian had definitely been drinking too much. "Yeah, forever."

Forever is a long time, especially in the fickle world of Hollywood, but it didn't seem to matter where Christian was concerned. No matter how famous Chris got, or how many new fans joined the growing hoarde of Kaniacs he always had time for Steve and Steve would always be there for Christian.

Steve was the original Kaniac, the first fan of Christian's (besides his Momma) who had believed in him and Steve was going to spend every day of their forever reminding Chris just how valuable he was.
