Years ago, a line came to me. I liked it and made it the first line of a haiku. Years later I remembered part - part - of that haiku, and when I couldn't find the original I decided to retry writing it.

Going through a notebook today, I found the original. Here it is:

Intravenous sleep
Feeds the body rest
And rests you just enough
To be closer to your best
Unnaturally awake
Is the way you have to be
To keep up with the world
-- Never mind that's unhealthy.

...I could do better than repeating the word "rest" in two lines next to each other, but I still like this.

This may be the OH JOHN RINGO NO of my review-writing life: an actually sort-of-positive note on the action film The Big Hit, a movie that made Roger Ebert's I Hated, Hated, Hated This Movie. Violence and stereotypes ahoy!

In & Out was the first movie I reviewed for the Hermiston Herald. I published it at the end of my first month at the paper; when I was preparing to start my job, which included editing the arts-and-entertainment listings, I'd gotten permission from Michael my editor to do reviews.
