Thoughts on various cultural things absorbed this month:
1) Chicago Shakespeare Theater's
Mary Stuart: I saw this play over the weekend. It did a very good job of making the titular character, a woman who had her second husband murdered so she could marry #3, sympathetic. Although in fairness to Mary, she was queen of Scotland, a place so poor that she couldn't afford guards or spies. She was also a virtual foreigner, having been raised in France. The play also did a nice bit on how Elizabeth ruled by chaos.
2) Murder on the Orient Express: I watched the latest movie version of this on pay-per-view. There are things which sound like good ideas but aren't, and a movie version of this novel is one of them. It sounds like a good idea to have a collection of strong actors in a confined space, but you end up with a bunch of people chewing scenery.
