So, last night John Scalzi had a dream that he was
still working at his college newspaper. Ironically, last night I had a dream that I was still in the Navy, on duty as Command Duty Officer (CDO) on my frigate. This happens a couple of times a year. Sometimes (although not this time) I wake up thinking I need to get up, put my uniform on and drive to the ship.
It’s not that I really want to be back in the Navy. If you want to simulate what I did, go get a brick, tie a string to it and hang it around your neck, then stand fully dressed in a cold shower from midnight to four AM. Go back to bed, and get up at your regular time to go to work. Do that every day for twenty or thirty days and you understand why Navy people have a reputation for having bad tempers.
I think, in everybody’s life, there’s a point that we mentally transition from being kids to adults. Whatever that point is, afterwards, that’s what we dream about. In my case, it's my Navy days. For John Scalzi, it's the days at the college newspaper.
What's your transition point?
