冬休み

Back home for the past 2 weeks has left me with no motivation to blog. It's just...so comfortable.

This will be my first post of 2011. Highlights of being back home include going to the beach, making mochi, receiving two amazing cakes I received on my birthday, another sulfur smelling New Years and the one night hotel stay the next day, and of course, the food.

I've also been reading books and watching movies galore. I was already reading Isaka Koutaro's "Sabaku," but since it takes a long time, I've also read The Life of Pi and The Joy Luck Club.

The sad thing about this town is that things tend to go backwards, rather than forward, leaving the nearest Borders a whopping two hours away. Thus, because we were in Kona and able to make a stop at the one last remaining Borders on the island, I bought a "shit ton" of books because I had the chance. I decided on a few John Steinbeck novels, because I need to read more American authors (because I've been neglecting them in favor of Japanese and English writers) and also because he writes a lot about Monterey, which is where my future may lie. Perhaps.

As for movies, the majority that I've been watching are Japanese. Kaiji, Subaru, Ahiru to Kamo no Coin Locker... They're all interesting, but I find that most of the best movies are those that were adapted from books. Again, this is my love of good plots bias speaking, but the great thing about Japanese novels is how weird they are. I can't even explain it.

I especially liked the third, Ahiru to Kamo no Coin locker (Which was also really weird, as you can probably tell from its title) mostly because I like the author who wrote the book it was based off of (Isaka Koutaro) and the main actors (Eita and Hamada Gaku). This movie also introduced me to Bob Dylan's music, which I find fascinating. I borrowed a 3-disk compilation CD from my local library and now have it all on itunes.

As for American movies, I saw Inception and Harry Potter 7 part one this break. I liked both, and thought that the most recent Harry Potter movie was definitely better than its immediate predecessor. I still think that the fifth movie was the best, though. And the third book will always be my favorite.

I'm finishing this post a bit later than I thought, as now I am back in Boulder, a few days after I started it. I may also post a bit more about my winter break, which was nothing short of funny craziness, especially with my family. (I am thinking of making it a bit creative, to make up for my lack of posting these past few weeks.)
