Sookie was doing her closing tasks; refilling the condiments, wiping down the tables, collecting misplaced silverware, etc. When everything seemed satisfactory, she untied her apron and stuffed it in her cubby hole before grabbing her purse and heading out into the parking lot ( ... )

Amelia's eyes widened as she heard Sookie's voice, bubbly and pleasant, not too far from her brewing confrontation. Wincing, Amelia's gaze darted back to the other witch, who now looked downright furious, from what little Amelia could make out of her expression in the shadows. "Uh... Sookie!" Amelia called out, trying to emphasize how bad this situation could get if Sookie came any closer. "I, uh, thought you were headed home for the night. It's pretty late, isn't it?"

Before Amelia could give her any more subtle warnings, though, the unfamiliar witch raised her hands and began to murmur, lightning jumping between her palms. "I'm growing tired of your distractions, Amelia. We're finishing this now."

In the back of her mind, Amelia called up a shielding spell and recited it in one quick breath as she bolted towards Sookie, aiming to grab her and take her down to the ground with her. This wasn't good at all, an innocent bystander caught in a witch's quarrel - and Amelia would be damned if she let Sookie die right in the middle of it.

From the tone in Amelia's voice, Sookie could tell this was not your average confrontation. She tried to keep the conversation going, "Nope, I had to close up. Sam wasn't feeling well--" she stopped short, biting her lip as the other woman seemed to grow taller the closer she came to them and sparks seemed to be coming out of her hands ( ... )

Amelia rolled off of Sookie as quick as she could, concentrating as much as she could on keeping her shield in place. The magical lightning was now arcing around them, deflected by Amelia's spell, but it wouldn't keep them safe forever ( ... )

After Amelia rolled off of her, Sookie sat up slightly, staring at the light show flickering all around her. She had a feeling her mouth was hanging open; she felt completely dumbfounded and in awe. She knew this power would be killing her if....Amelia wasn't protecting them.

Wow. She knew there was something different about her. But, she definitely had some power. And she watched in even more awe as Amelia restrained the other woman in some sort of invisible bond. Finally pushing herself up from the ground, she saw Amelia return to her.

"Yeah, I'm fine, just confused, I'd say" she said, eyes slightly wide, "Never dull around here."

She brushed the dirt off of her work clothes and looked from the restrained chick back to Amelia, "She gonna stay like that?"

Amelia shrugged, and replied, "After a while, it'll start to wear off. But I'm hoping I can convince her to head back to New Orleans."

Flexing her fingers, Amelia knelt down beside Rachelle and placed her hands on either side of her head. The other witch tried to wriggle out of her grasp, but it was no use as Amelia kept a firm hold on her. Amelia had been working on a memory spell for a while now, though she'd had yet to actually try it out on someone. Well, better now than never, she thought, closing her eyes and focusing on removing any trace of her from Rachelle's mind. They hadn't known one another for very long, so there weren't too many memories to deal with, but even after she had finished, Amelia felt exhausted ( ... )

"Convince her?" Sookie asked with arched brows. That didn't seem likely since the woman was clearly crazy, unstable, and homicidal.

But, apparently she had spoken too soon. Before she knew it, Amelia was working some sort of mojo on her mind that made the crazy lady completely forget what she was doing there. She just watched in amazement as the woman, got in her car peacefully and drove away. Well, that solved that.

Whatever that was ( ... )

After pulling out of the parking lot, following Sookie down the old roads that led to her house, Amelia realized that she was shaking. She had a death grip on the steering wheel, and a thousand scenarios were flashing through her mind.

The one thing she was most afraid of was that Sookie would hate her. After vampires had "come out of the coffin", some witches had talked of getting together and revealing themselves in response. But many had doubted the public's ability to handle their existence. Sure, blood-sucking creatures that roamed the night, they were pretty easy to welcome - okay, maybe not that easy, but they'd had a decent reception for the most part. Witches, however, had been burned at the stake at one point by normal human beings, and nobody in the witch community was completely willing to take that chance just yet ( ... )

Sookie kept glancing back on the short drive to her house to make sure Amelia was still following. After knowing one person was after her, she worried more might come. She wondered what Amelia had done to make someone that angry. Hell, maybe she'd been dating a vampire. People didn't seem to be too thrilled about anyone doing that. She rolled her eyes.

But, more importantly, Sookie wondered what Amelia was. Clearly, the girl had some powers and she was definitely different than your average human, that much she gained just from a few short times digging into her mind--politely, of course. Maybe she was some sort of witch. That seemed crazy, but in this world, it didn't seem too impossible anymore ( ... )

As they walked inside, Amelia immediately felt relieved. Sookie's house felt warm and inviting, and it made Amelia feel safe somehow. Sure, being out in the open or driving down a small back road made her feel pretty vulnerable, especially after the night she'd had so far. It was just comforting to have a roof over her head and good company with her. Even if that good company would soon learn Amelia's deepest - maybe you couldn't call it her darkest, since she wasn't a bad witch or anything - secret.

Shaking her head, she answered, "No, thanks," when Sookie offered her something to eat or drink. Amelia didn't really think she could keep anything down - her nerves were going haywire, and excessive magic use made her a little nauseous.

"You have a beautiful home," she commented, glancing around her with genuine interest.

Sookie couldn't help but smile slightly at the compliment. After all, her home had been in their family for over a hundred years. And her Gran had taken fine care of it over the years. "Thank you," she said, taking a seat at her kitchen table and motioning for Amelia to do the same.

She sucked in a breath, feeling more curious than impatient for the information, "So, I guess we'll dive on in," she started, "I know you're not an average, everyday girl, so how did you do what you did, Amelia? And who was that crazy woman?"

Amelia sighed heavily, then decided to be as frank as possible. Sookie had been thrown - or tackled, as it were - into this mess, and she deserved a straight answer... no matter how strange and complex it was ( ... )

Sookie listened to Amelia's story with attentiveness. So, her slight hunch had been right. Amelia was a witch. Of course, Sookie never dreamed that witches were also real. It didn't seem all that unlikely though, either. She wondered what else could be out there. Goblins or fairies or werewolves or zombies. Who knew!

She could 'hear' how nervous Amelia was. She didn't want to freak Sookie out, but she wanted to be honest with her. Sookie definitely appreciated that.

So, she smiled. But, it wasn't her 'I know what you're thinking, but I'll pretend I don't' smile, it was genuine. "I'm not all that freaked out, really."

Since they were being honest, she might as well share her own secret, "I mean, how could a telepathic waitress dating a vampire be freaked out by a witch?"

Amelia nodded, suddenly comprehending why Sookie's energy had felt so odd the night they'd first met. It wasn't often that she came across something she couldn't explain, so it was a relief to finally have an answer. "A telepath... Oh, boy... I can only imagine what kinds of things you heard in my head." Amelia laughed. "And do tell about this vampire boyfriend. Tall? Dark? Handsome?"

Amelia grinned easily, a wave of relief enveloping her. She was happy beyond words to have found someone to talk to about the supernatural weirdness that inhabited the world. Things "normal" people wouldn't normally be talking about, though the topic of vampires was pretty widespread.

Sookie laughed lightly, "Nothing bad, I promise," she said, "Really, your mind was a bit hard to read than most. For some people their deepest darkest secrets are just right on the surface, but your brain had a different...feeling about it, so I could tell from the start you were different. But, all I got was that you were afraid, nervous, worried, and a little mad at your dad," she eyed Amelia curiously.

As she asked about Bill, she glanced downward bashfully. No one had been this interested in her new boyfriend...could she call Bill her boyfriend? She had wanted to gush to someone so badly. "All of the above," she giggled, feeling like a normal girl for once, "He just moved her and lives real close by, actually--I can't read his mind, so it's so peaceful to be around him, 'specially after the horrible things I hear at work all day."

Amelia frowned as she considered the multitude of issues she had with her father. They didn't exactly have a typical father-daughter relationship, and probably never would. But Amelia was used to having a silent gap stretched between them, only breached by the occasional phone call or birthday card.

"My dad is... difficult. He was never around when I was growing up, and things haven't really changed since then if you know what I mean. He's another man in love with his work."

Shaking her head, Amelia smiled and turned her attention back to Sookie. "Tall, dark, and handsome? Any man - vampire or no vampire - with those three qualities is a-okay in my book. Maybe if I stay in Bon Temps long enough, I can find myself a good man..." she trailed off, smiling at the prospect. The last man she'd dated had been a guy named Thad who'd had a tattoo of a flower on his left hip. Not one of her best dating moments, that was for sure.
