Gerard Butler single-handedly saves President Asher again! I liked this movie for what it is: an over the top action movie with lots of explosions and gunplay. If you can past 2 big suspension of disbelief issues at the beginning, you can enjoy it too. First: the villain of the piece survives a drone strike that dropped a massive bomb mere feet from him, and comes out of it with apparently just a limp, while 1 son survives but loses his legs, and the other seems to have no injuries at all, yet the daughter (of course) dies.
The second issue a HUGE one to overcome, and is the major conceit of the film. Given the assumption that the villain has been planning this for 2 years, there are still several "makes you go Hmmm" moments. Okay, the guy is an arms dealer and owns several companies in England that would give him access to tons of explosive. Therefore, all the car bombs and the boat loaded with explosives is totally plausible. Planting large explosives in major London landmark buildings without detection seems kind of iffy. London bridge & Westminster Abbey among them. Hmm.
Also, we're to believe that this guy, in less than 2 years, co-opted or infiltrated HALF of the London police force AND the Buckingham Palace guards? (the guys in the red uniforms and beaver fur hats) I don't think so. Plus, he sure seems to have an unlimited number of bad guys to chase after Butler with. (plus, since this is taking place in England, he suddenly finds American uniforms and weapons to use as decoys, when he hears a Delta team is being deployed from Italy AFTER the attacks are underway?) Hmmm, again.
So, even with 2 years to plan (but probably more like 18 months; after all, he needed time to even conceive of the plan sometime after the drone strike), once he orchestrated the plot to get all the various heads of state to come to London, he only had like 3 days to intercept their security plans and plan his targeted attacks on each of them. (why didn't he wait until they were all in the same place and then attack with all his forces at once? He certainly seemed to have all the intel and inside men to do so; not to mention explosives) I have to call bullshit on the attacks on the French and Japanese leaders. There was NO way they could have timed those attacks. Hell, the French leader died only because he was stupid and kept texting like a teenager when his security told him it was time to get to the car. (he couldn't text in his car?) If he had moved then, the explosion several minutes later would have missed him.
Gerard Butler is excellent again as the superman secret service agent who can't be stopped. People die all around him, while he survives with only a few scratches. Not even a helicopter crash phases him!
I will say that I was pleasantly surprised that when the traitor was revealed, it was NOT the man I thought it would be. That was a nice twist.
Finally, I'll address something I saw on IMDB's "goofs" page: The president's code name is "Southpaw", and it is mentioned that he is left handed, but when he is seen shooting a pistol, he shoots with his right hand.
This is NOT necessarily a goof. I am also left handed, but I also shoot with my right hand. This is an issue that depends on which eye is a person's "depth perception" eye. My right eye is my depth perception eye, so it's natural to shoot right handed that way. Supposedly, baseball players that are 'opposites' like me make better batters, because their depth perception eye is facing the pitcher when at the plate, so they can focus on the ball better.
Don't know which of your eyes handles your depth perception? Here's a quick way to find out: make a triangle with your hands and hold them in front of you. Focus on an object on the far side of the room, then take turns closing one eye and then the other. Whichever eye sees the object centered in your triangle, like when both eyes are open, is your depth perception eye. And now you know! :D
Anyway, yes, I nitpick, but I still liked the movie. I just like to complain about flaws that pull me out of a movie.
