Finally got off my lazy butt and went to see this today. Well worth the wait! Look, this movie's been out for several weeks now, you don't need *me* to tell you it's a fantastic film and you should go see it. You've either already seen it at least once, are planning to see it but haven't got around to it yet, or have no interest in it (your loss). So, I will talk about something other than the plot:
Full confession -- I stopped following comics around 1990 or 91. For me, the "golden age" of comics was the 1980s when John Byrne was king of the comics, Kitty Pryde & I were briefly in the same age bracket, and I was buying roughly 100+ comics a month. (No way I could afford that many comics now, considering how high the cover prices have climbed, plus I was running out of available time per week to *read* all those books, and this was back before the world wide web existed!) Any way, back then I was a big fan of the X-Men comic. I loved Kitty Pryde and the group's SR-71 Blackbird-type plane. (the real SR-71 only has room for 2 people, and they have to wear spacesuits) Back then, Piotr Rasputin was a tall, normal-looking teen-aged boy who could become the armored "Colossus" at will, when forced into battle. Has something changed in the past 3 decades so that he now is permanently in armored form? His first scene in the movie shows him at home, eating breakfast, but he's in armored form instead of normal human. For the whole movie he is only ever seen as armored, as if that's his normal state, like Nightcrawler or Beast.
Other than that bit of confusion on my part, I loved the movie and was very pleasantly surprised to find that Gina Carano had a part, as the villain Angel Dust. I never saw any of her MMA fights, but she stole my heart the first time I saw her on American Gladiators as "Crush". (still the name I think of first when I see her) I've seen her in a couple other movies, such as Haywire and Fast & Furious 6, and enjoyed her performance. She also had a small role in the campy cutscenes in the video game Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3.
Lots of laughs and excellent action in this movie, with the best opening credit sequence ever! Okay kids, Pop Quiz time:
