~
After they dropped their bags off in the guest bedroom, Hyunmin gave them a list of groceries to buy and they headed off down to the shops while Hyunmin stayed back to prepare the utensils needed for the barbeque.
They arrived at the shops five minutes later and then began the quest to find everything on the list. As they walked through the aisle where all the vegetables were located, Mika explained to Karam the best way to find which were the fresh vegetables and which ones didn’t look fresh. He also explained what to look out for when buying meat, such as checking to see which meat looked tender, which ones were cheap yet not of poor quality etc.
“Wow, I never realized there were so many things to look out for when shopping for groceries,” Karam said as they placed the last of the vegetables in the shopping trolley. “My parents always did all the grocery shopping, and during the times that I did follow along, I would just kind of wander off into the chocolate and snacks section.”
“Hahaha should I feel special that I get to be with you on your first time grocery shopping then?” Mika asked playfully as they rounded the corner into the next aisle.
“Hahaha yes you should!” Karam replied slapping Mika playfully on the arm. They continued walking through all the aisles, ticking of each item on the list as they placed those items into the trolley. Finally as the rounded the corner of the last aisle, Karam’s eyes lit up like a puppy seeing a pile of dog treats in front him as they discovered they had reached the chocolate and snacks section.
Mika resisted the urge to pinch the younger boy’s cheeks and instead watched as Karam bounded off happily further down the aisle in search of his favourite snacks. Mika slowly followed behind Karam watching as the pile of snacks in Karam’s arms slowly increased until Mika was forced to quickly help take some packets of chips from the top of the pile to avoid them from toppling over.
“You do remember that we have to carry everything we buy back to Hyunmin’s right?” Mika asked as they placed all of Karam’s snacks in the trolley along with the other groceries.
Karam smiled a shy smile, before ducking his head and replying, “Y-yea its okay, don’t worry I may not look it, but I’m pretty strong, I’ll carry the snacks as well as half of the groceries.”
Mika reached forward and ruffled the younger boy’s hair. “It’s okay, I was only joking around, and it’s not like we bought that much. Anyway we should probably get going now, or Hyunmin will start calling me and nagging me asking where we are again.”
Karam blushed slightly as he remembered not just an hour ago, the position he and Mika were in on his bed when Hyunmin had called Mika asking where they were. Mika seemed to remember too and he quickly tried to change the topic while pushing the trolley to the check out counter.
“Oh yea I wonder if Injun’s arrived yet, I’m curious to see his younger brother too, I wonder if he’s as bubbly and cheerful as Injun?”
Karam tapped a finger to his chin, glad for the change of topic before replying, “Hmm now that you mention it, I’m curious too. Injun has mentioned his brother a few times and from what he’s been saying, his brother seems like a nice kid. Guess we’ll find out soon!”
~
The walk back to Hyunmin’s was relaxing, both boys carrying plastic bags in each hand filled with groceries. Although Karam had insisted on carrying more since he’d bought so many snacks, Mika objected using the excuse that he was older so he should carry more.
“You just think I’m weak because I have such feminine features, right hyung?” Karam asked as they turned the corner into Hyunmin’s street. Mika chuckled out loud at the fact that Karam had actually admitted to having feminine features.
“Hmm … maybe,” Mika replied with a smirk on his face as he glanced sideways at Karam. If Karam’s hands weren’t full of groceries he would have hit Mika over the head at his reply. As such, Karam just settled with a ‘hmfph’ noise before walking ahead of Mika to show he wasn’t happy.
“Awww don’t be angry,” Mika said as he walked faster to catch up with the younger boy. “I’m sorry Karam, I really didn’t mean it - forgive me please?”
Karam turned his face to look at Mika and Mika put on his best puppy dog eyes hoping he didn’t look like an idiot. The corners of Karam’s lips turned up into a smile before he replied, “I forgive you hyung, I was only joking, I wasn’t really angry at you.”
Mika smiled in return and was about to say something when his phone started ringing. Switching all the bags into one hand, Mika dug his phone out from his pocket and smiled when he saw who the caller was.
“Hello Hyunmin-umma,” he answered causing Karam to giggle beside him.
“Hey Mi- what did you just call me?? What part of me looks like an umma??”
“Isn’t it obvious? The way you keep calling me every hour to ask where I am,” Mika grinned causing Karam to fall into another fit of giggles. “Anyway, we’re just a few houses away, we’ll be there in two minutes.”
“Pfft whatever, it’s more like the longer you guys take to come back, the longer it’ll take to prepare everything for the barbeque. Anyways, I’ll see you two lovebirds soon.”
Mika’s jaw dropped open after hearing the last sentence. L-lovebirds?? Not knowing why he was feeling so flustered over it, Mika quickly tried to hide his flushed face by walking slightly faster than Karam.
~
After discussing with Hyunmin on what they needed to prepare, Mika pulled Karam along behind him into the kitchen and dressed them both in aprons before setting to work.
“Have you ever cooked before Karam?” Mika asked as he tied the strings of Karam’s apron together.
“Umm … not really … does cooking instant noodles count?” Karam replied back as he straightened the front of his apron.
“Hmm maybe … not?” Mika said chuckling lightly as he dodged Karam’s playful hit to his shoulder.
They continued joking around as Mika started opening the cabinets and taking out the necessary utensils that they’d be using. He set up a cutting board on the space beside the sink and then another one on the kitchen counter beside it.
Taking the groceries out of the bags, Mika then began the task of teaching Karam the basics of food hygiene - washing the vegetables and peeling the skin off some before cutting them. While Karam attempted his first time at peeling the skin off the carrots, Mika went searching through the drawers for a suitable knife for Karam that wasn’t too big or heavy, just in case Karam happened to be a bit clumsy with sharp things.
Finally finding a suitable one for Karam and one for himself, Mika shut the drawer and placed the knives on the cutting boards before looking over Karam’s shoulder to see how the younger was doing.
“Hmm … not bad for a first timer,” Mika commented as he watched Karam peel the last of the skin off for the carrots. After setting the carrots to one side, Mika then got Karam to wash the other vegetables that they would need for tonight’s dinner.
While Karam was busy with that Mika then set to work with preparing the meat. They’d bought a little bit of each including chicken, beef and pork just to give a bit more variety to it. As he set to work in slicing the meats to appropriate slices he tried to ignore the stares that Karam kept giving him every now and then.
Finally after catching Karam look away for the umpteenth time, Mika put his knife down and closed the distance between them.
“What’s with the stares?” Mika asked directly grinning slightly.
Karam didn’t reply straight away but instead hid his head in embarrassment and continued his job in peeling the skin of the vegetables.
“Ah its nothing Mika-hyung, I was just wondering, you seemed so experienced in all this. Do you like cooking?” Karam asked in a small voice.
“Hahahaha is that all it is?” Mika replied nudging Karam lightly. “Hmm … I do enjoy cooking I guess. But it’s because my dad is always away on business trips so I’ve had to learn to take care of myself, which means learning to cook on my own.”
“O-oh umm I’m sorry hyung,” Karam whispered, feeling bad for having made Mika talk about something unhappy again.
Mika sighed and used the tips of his fingers to lift Karam’s chin up. “Karam its okay, don’t be apologetic about it. It’s not that bad, think of it as something positive. And remember what I said about it last Saturday? Because of my dad always going away, it makes our bond closer. Now smile for me.”
Karam blushed under the elder boy’s gaze and let out a shy smile. Mika chuckled at the adorableness of it but didn’t remove his fingers from under Karam’s chin. He continued to stare at the younger boy until a silent cough from the other side of the kitchen interrupted them.
Mika removed his hand from the boy while the latter quickly jumped back lowering his eyes in embarrassment. Looking in the direction from where the noise came from, Mika saw Hyunmin standing there with an amused look and Injun on his side with a silly grin on his face. There was a third person also standing next to Injun, a boy with bright red hair that Mika could only assume was Injun’s younger brother.
“Now, now, we have guests here Mika, keep your intimate moments with your angel till later when you’re in a more private area,” Hyunmin said with a smirk trying to keep his laughter in check.
Mika felt his face flush in embarrassment and he didn’t need to turn around to know that Karam was feeling the exact same. Seeing Mika’s embarrassed look, Hyunmin couldn’t hold it in and burst out laughing followed not long after by Injun.
The red haired boy just stood to the side, watching the scene unfold before him with a shy smile forming on his face. Once Hyunmin had recollected himself enough, he introduced the red haired boy as Injun’s younger brother, Jay. Polite greetings were exchanged and soon Mika and Karam went back to their previous tasks of preparing the food.
Half an hour later, Mika was finished slicing up all the meats which was then passed onto Hyunmin to deal with, while Mika then started the next step - teaching Karam how to cook the rice. It didn’t take long, and once that was finished, Mika then began the strenuous task of making kimchi jigae (soup) while Karam stood beside him at the sink attempting for the first time to cut all the vegetables up.
While the two boys were busy in the kitchen, Hyunmin took up the responsibility of teaching Injun and Jay how to cook the meat on the grill outside. As Hyunmin watched Injun quickly plop the meat onto the grill with the pair of tongs before jumping away quickly, he couldn’t help but pinch the younger boy on the cheeks for being so cute.
Jay, who was slightly shy from the beginning, since it was his first time meeting everyone, slowly began warming up to Hyunmin. Jay really looked up to Injun who would always be there to either support him or cheer him up whenever he was unhappy. So in other words, anyone who was nice to Injun, Jay would approve of an d like too - and Hyunmin did seem like a nice guy overall.
While they waited for the thicker pieces of meat to cook, Injun mentioned that Jay was really good at popping, saying he even won first place in the talent show for his school. Curious as to how good he was, Hyunmin quickly asked for a demo.
Shyly, Jay agreed and showed off some simple moves. As Karam looked out the window from the kitchen he saw Jay’s popping skills and his mouth formed the shape of an ‘O’.
“Wow that’s so cool,” Karam said as he continued to watch in awe while Jay broke out into a full popping routine.
“Hmm?” Mika murmured as he turned to see what Karam was so mesmerized with. Mika’s eyes went wide when he saw that Karam was staring out the window while still chopping the carrots on the board.
“Karam, be careful,” Mika said raising his voice slightly.
“Huh?” Karam said while turning around to face Mika. However, this action caused Karam’s hand (which was holding the knife) to slip and he yelped in pain as the knife came into contact with the tip of his left index finger.
“Karam!” Mika quickly dropped the spatula he was using to stir the contents in the pot and rushed to the younger boy’s side to examine the cut. It wasn’t too deep but there was still blood seeping out of the cut.
Turning the stove off, Mika then pulled Karam into the bathroom and proceeded to look for the first aid kit. Once he located it, Mika grabbed a bandaid and some antiseptic cream from it and dumped them on the counter before taking Karam’s hand and running it under the water to get rid of the blood.
“I-I’m sorry hyung, I’m so clumsy,” Karam whispered. Mika looked up from his task and smiled at the younger boy.
“It’s okay it is your first time after all. Just try to stay focused when you have a sharp object in your hand. Does it hurt?” Karam shook his head in response while Mika turned the tap off and dried his hand before applying the cream onto the cut and putting the bandaid over it.
As Mika put the first aid kit away, Karam mumbled his thanks and they walked back to the kitchen to continue their tasks. As Mika continued with his kimchi jigae, he kept a watch on Karam to make sure he wouldn’t injure himself unintentionally again.
Everything went smoothly after that and soon Mika was cooking the last of the dishes as Karam stood to the side watching in awe. Smiling at the younger boy’s facial expressions, Mika asked, “Is watching me cook really that interesting? Wouldn’t you prefer to help grill the meat outside with the others?”
Karam looked up to meet the elder’s gaze and shook his head. “No its okay, watching you cook is more interesting, can you teach me how to cook one day hyung?”
“Hahaha sure no problem,” Mika replied as he placed the last of the food onto the plate for Karam to carry out to the dining table. While Karam busied himself with scooping the rice into five bowls, Mika stared out the kitchen window as he washed his hands, chuckling as he watched Hyunmin dangle a piece of meat just above Injun’s reach while Jay just stood to the side smiling at the two elders acting like elementary school kids.
~
Five minutes later, the five of them sat around the dining table eating in a comfortable silence. Everyone praised Mika’s cooking skills who blushed slightly at the amount of compliments.
“My cooking skills are just average though,” Mika said ducking his head down and Jay shyly commented yet again on another dish.
Hyunmin elbowed Mika in the side causing him to bump slightly against Karam who was sitting on the other side. “Mika just admit it, your cooking skills are the best out there, why else would I decide to steal your lunch on the occasions you make food to bring to school?”
This caused everyone around the table to laugh and Mika quickly elbowed Hyunmin back while he was distracted. Seconds later, Mika and Hyunmin started having a full out elbowing contest while the others watched on in interest, Karam occasionally dodging a flailing Mika while Injun would sometimes swerve towards Jay when Hyunmin leant too far his way to avoid Mika.
After much laughing and maybe a few light bruises later, the eldest two of the group finally settled down and they continued eating in peace. Deciding to that it was too quiet for his liking, Hyunmin decided to strike up a conversation with Karam asking about his life living in the states.
“So Karam,” Hyunmin said getting the boy’s attention. “Were you born in the states?”
Swallowing the food in his mouth first, Karam replied back, “Actually I was born in Korea but my parents moved overseas when I was a year old so yeah even though I’ve lived overseas for most of my life, I would still consider myself Korean and not American.”
“Oooh I see. Were there many Koreans in the school you went to? You didn’t get teased or picked on did you? In the movies I watched, students over there are often racist and just like picking on people in general.” Hyunmin had a worried look on his face causing Karam giggle a bit before replying. It was rare seeing Hyunmin look so serious.
“Ahh Hyunmin-hyung, you watch too many movies. Not all schools are like that. Well I mean, there’s bound to be at least one group of people that like picking on others in every school, but the school I went to was okay. There were a few other Koreans and others with Asian ethnicity but the majority of the people were Americans. But everyone there was really nice. I made a lot of friends.” Karam finished of with a smile.
“Oh really? Well that’s good to hear,” Hyunmin replied. “I hate people who pick on others, why couldn’t we all just get along?” With a sigh Hyunmin chewed on some rice before asking more questions such as comparing the differences between living over there and in Korea.
Karam was happy to answer all the questions, he really missed everyone and everything that he’d left behind so he was quite happy to be talking about his life before coming to Korea. Injun also voiced a few questions of his own and the rest of dinner passed with Karam answering questions and everyone else listening attentively.
After everyone was finished and full, Hyunmin offered to wash up the dishes since everyone had helped with the cooking but he was quickly denied the job when Karam jumped up saying he would do it.
“We’re the guests here and I’d feel guilty if I didn’t help out,” Karam explained.
“But you’ve already helped with the cooking Karam,” Hyunmin pointed out.
A few minutes later, Hyunmin put up his hands in defeat chuckling as Karam persisted on helping out. “Okay fine you win, but on one condition, you find someone to help you out with the cleaning up. And since you absolutely refuse to have me do anything, you have to choose from Mika, Injun and Jay.”
Karam was about to protest about not needing anyone’s help when Mika volunteered from beside him.
“It’s okay, I’ll help out. Besides I know where everything is compared to everyone else so it’ll be faster if I help out.”
Hyunmin nodded his head in approvement before standing up. “Okay well now that that’s solved, Injun and Jay follow me, you guys like video games right?”
Both nodded their head and together all three of them left for the living room leaving Mika and Karam to clean up.
“Well, let’s get started then,” Mika exclaimed and together they cleared up all the plates and bowls from the table to put in the sink. As Mika filled the sink with hot water, Karam went to wipe down the table with a cloth. When he came back Mika held out a pair of rubber gloves for him to put on.
“Thanks Mika-hyung,” Karam said as he put the gloves on.
“No problem. So do you want to wash or rinse the dishes Karam?” Mika asked.
“Hmm … well since you’re already standing on the right hand side, you can be in charge of rinsing the dishes and I’ll do the washing,” Karam replied back with a smile.
“Okay,” Mika replied and Karam set to work scrubbing at the dishes in the soapy water before handing them over to Mika who rinsed them in the clean water and then placing it on the dish racks.
Fifteen minutes later, the dishes were done and Mika finished wiping down the kitchen counter before declaring they were finished. Walking to the living room to join the rest, they saw Hyunmin and Injun sitting on the floor playing Tekken on the PS3 while Jay sat on the couch behind them laughing as Injun’s character got K.O’ed on the screen.
“Jayyy,” Injun whined turning around to face his younger brother. “Don’t laugh, you’re supposed to be on my siidde.”
Everyone laughed at that while Jay tried to defend himself when a cushion was thrown lightly in his direction. Karam took a seat next to Jay and Mika took the seat beside Karam. After catching the cushion that was tossed back in his direction, Injun started another match with Hyunmin while the others sat back and watched.
Time passed quickly and soon it was getting pretty late and it was time for Injun and Jay to go home.
“So you’re going to walk home?” Hyunmin asked as the two brothers grabbed their bags and started walking to the front door.
“Oh yeah, its okay, it’ll only be a 20 minute walk, we’ll be fine,” Injun replied as they put their shoes on.
“But it’s so dark …” Hyunmin said with a worried look on his face. “How about I give you guys a lift? I’ll just use my parents’ car.”
“Oh hyung you have your license?” Karam, who’d been standing next to Mika asked.
Hyunmin turned around and gave him a smirk. “Of course, I went for my license as soon as I could. But my parents don’t allow me to drive to school of course, I don’t even have my own car.”
At first Injun and Jay protested, but in the end Hyunmin’s argument about it being dangerous at night won out and he quickly went to grab his wallet, a jacket and the car keys before leaving the house with the two brothers waving goodbye.
After closing the front door, Mika led Karam back to the couches in the living room and they decided to play some more games on the PS3 while waiting for Hyunmin to return. Not really in the mood to play Tekken for the 100th time, Mika decided on a lighter game - Little Big Planet.
He’d only played it a few times, but this was the first time Karam had played it and at first Karam was confused as to how things worked. But as the game went on, Mika pointed out a few tips and soon the two of them were soaring through the levels, laughing occasionally when they would slap each others’ characters with stamps and weird outfits.
It was only when they heard the front door open and close with Hyunmin yelling out “I’m back” did the two finally pause the game and take their eyes off the screen.
“Welcome back Hyunmin-hyung, was everything okay?” Karam asked as he slid closer to Mika to make some space to the right of him for Hyunmin to sit down.
“Yeah, it was okay, they actually live not too far away from me, but I didn’t want them walking home in the dark. I made sure they had securely locked the door after I left,” Hyunmin replied as he took the seat in the space Karam offered.
“Sheesh Hyunmin, you’re treating them like babies,” Mika said jokingly as he poked his head from around Karam’s body to grin at Hyunmin. This caused Karam to giggle while Hyunmin quickly grabbed the cushion next to him to throw at his best friend in mock anger.
Using Karam as a shield, Mika grabbed onto his shoulders to try and hide from Hyunmin. After a bit of swivelling and ducking movements from Mika, Hyunmin finally gave up on trying to hit him and instead hugged the cushion to his chest while saying, “Yahh I’m not treating them like babies, I just felt it was my responsibility to see them safely home since I was the one that invited them over.”
“Aww that is nice of you Hyunmin-hyung,” Karam replied with sincerity. Then turning around to face Mika, Karam gave him his best unhappy-puppy face while saying, “Mika-hyung, you should apologize to Hyunmin-hyung right now.”
Of course Mika couldn’t resist that cute and adorable face and quickly apologized to Hyunmin, even adding the cute “saranghayeo” pose (
like this 8D) afterwards. This caused all three of them to burst into laughter as it looked pretty silly coming from someone whose face looked so serious all the time.
After calming themselves down, Hyunmin stood up and announced that he would go take a shower first. As his footsteps faded away, Mika got up to get some drinks from the kitchen. Opening the fridge, Mika grabbed two cans of soda out before heading back to where Karam was sitting.
Deciding to pay Karam back for making him apologize to Hyunmin before, Mika stood behind the couch right where Karam was sitting staring at the paused game on the screen. Holding the can of soda with the tips of his fingers, Mika slid forward and quickly pressed the cold beverage against Karam’s unsuspecting cheek.
Letting out a loud yelp before falling off and rolling onto the floor, Karam turned around only to see his friend, body half sprawled on top of the couch laughing his head off, a can of soda in each hand.
“H-Hyung!!! You scared me!” Karam exclaimed, saying the first thing that came to his mind. Mika only continued to laugh while Karam felt his cheeks tingle a bit in embarrassment.
“Hyunnngggg,” Karam tried again in a whiny voice trying to get the other’s attention. Mika slowly calmed down and managed to put the cans on the small table beside the couch before coming around to take a seat next to the pouting boy on floor.
“Awww I’m sorry Karam,” Mika said as he put an arm around the younger boy’s shoulders. “It was just a small payback for making me apologize to Hyunmin. I didn’t mean to scare you that badly.”
“Hmpfh,” Karam responded as he crossed his arms and turned away faking anger. “You scared me hyung. At least I didn’t scare you, I only made you apologize.”
Mika knew Karam wasn’t really angry at him; he was probably more embarrassed at himself than angry at Mika. But Mika decided to humour the younger boy anyway. Karam looked so cute trying to pretend he was really angry. Shuffling closer to his pouting angel, Mika wrapped his arms around the younger boy’s waist before cuddling up from behind.
“Awww I’m really sorry Karam, I didn’t mean to scare you. You can do it back to me if you want. I promise I won’t scream. Neh Karam, forgive me please?” Mika said as he rested his chin against the other’s shoulder trying to nuzzle his face against the other’s cheek.
Karam blushed bright red at the close proximity they were in and felt his heart beat increase all of a sudden. Trying his best to calm it down and act normal on the outside, Karam took a few breaths before the meaning of Mika’s words sunk in.
“Y-You’ll let me do it back to you hyung?” Karam asked turning his head slightly to look Mika in the eyes. Unfortunately, Mika was still in the middle of nuzzling his face against the other, so when Karam turned around, it caused his lips to accidently brush lightly against Mika’s cheek.
Both boys froze at the light touch with Mika’s arms still wrapped tightly around Karam’s waist. Karam refused to raise his eyes knowing that Mika’s eyes were currently focused on him and continued to keep them lowered, focusing once again on Mika’s collarbones that were protruding out from the creamy wide-neck top that he was currently wearing.
They continued to stay in that position until a soft cough broke them apart quickly. Looking up past Mika, Karam saw a freshly showered Hyunmin standing a few meters away with a big grin on his face.
“Am I interrupting anything?” he asked in a slightly amused voice.
Feeling even more embarrassed, Karam said, “N-no … I-I’m going to go take a shower now if that’s okay?” before standing up quickly.
Hyunmin nodded before waiting for Karam to grab his bag before guiding him to the bathroom, but not before giving Mika a wink over his shoulder.
After making sure Karam was settled, Hyunmin quickly made his way back into the living room where he saw Mika had moved back to sit on the couch, drinking a can of soda. Taking a seat next to his best friend, Hyunmin yanked the soda out of his hand before tilting his head back and taking a drink.
“Yahh that’s mine, you should go get your own if you want a drink,” Mika said pouting slightly.
Hyunmin grinned before saying, “this is my house Mika, I can choose to drink whatever I want.”
Of course Mika had nothing to say to that and just stayed quiet waiting for his friend to strike.
“So …” Hyunmin started and Mika knew he was in for it. “What happened before Mika? You know, when I came out and saw you guys in that position, I almost didn’t want to interrupt your perfect moment. But it was just too good of a chance to pass up,” Hyunmin finished off before laughing at Mika’s embarrassment again.
Mika mumbled something along the lines of “it was nothing before grabbing the forgotten PS3 controller and resuming the game. Hyunmin knew his friend long enough to know that Mika wouldn’t voice out more on the subject anymore and let it go at that. But that didn’t mean he could stop embarrassing his friend.
Patting his friend on the shoulder followed by good luck as a joke, Hyunmin picked up the other controller and continued the game with Mika using Karam’s character.
Karam took slightly longer than Hyunmin did in the shower, but he soon emerged back into the living room in a pair of fleece sheep patterned pyjamas.
“Umm Hyunmin-hyung, where can I put my stuff?” he asked shly from the side.
While Mika sat there ogling at Karam with thoughts of omg how cuuuuuttttttte can this boy get >3< floating around in his head, Hyunmin paused the game before standing up to guide Karam into the guest room.
“Oh by the way,” he said turning around to face Mika, although what he said next was addressed to both Mika and Karam. “You two will have to share a room. My mum used the other guest room as a storage space, so I’ve only got one spare room. But I’m sure you guys don’t mind right?”
Mika and Karam’s eyes went wide while Hyunmin chuckled silently to himself. After that embarrassing scene just minutes ago, the idea of sharing a room sounded too awkward. But nevertheless, both boys nodded their heads and Hyunmin tugged lightly on Karam’s arm to lead him to the guest bedroom. While they did that, Mika decided to sneak away to take his shower. He wanted to try and avoid Hyunmin’s knowing look, at least for now anyway.
In the guest room Karam got quite a shock when he saw there was only one bed in the room. Hyunmin noticed Karam’s shocked face and ruffled the boy’s hair to get his attention.
“It’s a queen size bed so there’s plenty of room for both of you guys to sleep on. Don’t worry, I promise I won’t tell anyone else at school.”
Karam only nodded silently in response, too embarrassed to say anything else.
“Well I’ll leave you to settle down here, come back out to the living room when you’re done. We’ll watch a movie before going to sleep,” and with that, Hyunmin left Karam alone in the bedroom.
Walking back to the living room, Hyunmin saved the game on the PS3 and then switched the game console off before opening the drawers underneath the TV shelf to pick out a movie. After contemplating on what genre to pick from, Hyunmin smirked to himself and decided on horror.
In the middle of going through a bunch of horror DVDs, Hyunmin was interrupted by a dripping wet Lee Suhoon wrapped in only a towel from waist down walking leisurely out into the room.
Sneaking a quick glance towards the door of the guest room where Karam was, Hyunmin then turned back to stare at his best friend who was currently digging clothes out of his bag that he’d left by the couch.
“Umm … Mika, what are you doing?” Hyunmin asked in a perplexed voice.
After grabbing the clothes he needed, Mika zipped up his bag and stood up before replying, “What does it look like I’m doing? I forgot to bring clothes to change into afterwards so of course I’m grabbing them now. What’s the matter, I do it all the time when I come over Hyunmin.”
“Umm … yea but,” pointing a finger in the direction of the guest room Hyunmin said, “We have guests other than you here today Mika.”
-__- … o__o … O__o … O____________________________O
“OH MY GOD!!!” was heard throughout the house before a stumbling Mika dashed back into the bathroom just as Karam walked out of the bedroom.
“Umm … what was that?” Karam asked as he took a seat beside Hyunmin who was muffling his laughter behind a cushion.
After calming down a bit, Hyunmin explained, “Mika forgot to bring clothes to change into when he was in the bathroom so he came out to grab some. But then he forgot you were in the house and he came out here wearing only a towel around his waist.”
Karam’s mouth fell open at that and he couldn’t decide if he should be laughing along with Hyunmin or feeling embarrassed for imagining his friend with just a towel around his waist. Luckily he was saved the choice when Mika came shuffling out of the bathroom, cheeks flushed pink, dressed in a white t-shirt and a black pair of shorts, towel slung around his neck.
Not looking at either of them in the face, Mika grabbed his bag off the floor before disappearing into the guest room. Karam remained silent while Hyunmin again tried to muffle his laughter behind the cushion.
Looking at the bunch of movies scattered in front of Hyunmin, Karam asked, “So have you decided on a movie to watch yet Hyunmin-hyung?”
Removing the pillow from his face but still chuckling slightly, Hyunmin grabbed the DVD he had selected earlier on and passed to Karam, “Yep, this one!”
Just looking at the front cover made Karam cringe, horror wasn’t exactly his favourite genre. But since he was the guest, he didn’t want to complain. Besides it’s not like he would be watching it alone right?
Mika emerged from the bedroom a few minutes later to see Hyunmin and Karam already settled on the couch with the beginning credits of the movie rolling on the screen. Taking the seat next to Karam on the right side (since Hyunmin had sat on the left side of the couch with Karam in the middle), Mika took the offered can of soda from Hyunmin’s outstretched arm before relaxing into the couch.
However thirty minutes later into the movie, Karam was clinging to his side with his eyes shut tight while Hyunmin was laughing his head off on the other side. It wasn’t really that scary thought Mika thought as he tried to coax Karam to open his eyes.
But Karam wouldn’t budge and instead said, “Tell me when the bad part’s over hyung.”
Mika assumed the bad part meant when the monster disappeared and the bunch of teenagers were safe again right? That would take awhile knowing the way horror movies worked these days. Mika watched on as the group of teenagers hid in the room under the staircase of the house, waiting for the monster to pass. The screen showed the teenagers waiting in fear, shrouded in the darkness of the room.
All was quiet in the movie and Mika held his breath, knowing what was going to happen next as one of the teenagers reached out to open the door.
Karam on the other hand, hearing everything go quiet, asked, “Is it over hyung?”
Mika was about to respond when he was beaten to it by Hyunmin.
“Yep you can look now Karam, it’s daytime now and the monster disappeared!”
Mika tried to stop Karam from opening his eyes but he was too late. Just as Karam opened his eyes to face the screen, the monster appeared before the group of teenagers and slammed one of the teenagers against the wall behind him.
Karam let a scream before half leaping into Mika’s lap causing Hyunmin to double over in laughter. Mika glared at his best friend before grabbing a cushion and throwing it at him. After seeing it land squarely in Hyunmin’s face, Mika turned his attention back to the shivering boy in his lap who had his head buried against Mika’s shoulder. Not really knowing what to do though, Mika settled with placing one hand on the younger boy’s waist while patting his back with his other hand in a soothing manner.
After a few more minutes of comforting, Karam soon calmed down and removed himself from Mika’s lap in search of another cushion. Spotting one on the floor nearby, Karam grabbed it threw it at Hyunmin playfully before settling himself against Mika’s side again.
They continued watching the rest of the movie in silence with Mika’s arm wrapped around Karam’s shoulders while Karam clung to him tightly every time a gruesome scene came on. Hyunmin tried his best not coo at his two friends cuddling beside him and instead focused his attention on the movie.
Finally after what seemed like forever to Karam, the movie finally ended and he couldn’t be any happier when the finishing credits started rolling on the screen. While Hyunmin took the DVD out of the player Karam couldn’t stop stifling a yawn. Glancing at the clock on the wall above he saw it was 11pm already.
“Are you tired Karam?” Mika asked, noticing the younger boy’s yawn. Karam nodded his head shyly explaining how he was normally in bed by 10pm. Deciding that they’d had enough fun for the day, Hyunmin announced that they should all go to bed as he turned off the TV.
After biding them a good night (and a wink at Mika that Karam didn’t see), Hyunmin went to his own room to get some rest leaving the other two to walk to their shared room. Mika led the way and wasn’t really sure what to do once he closed the door behind them. They stood their for a few awkward seconds before Mika finally spoke up.
“Umm … if you don’t feel comfortable with sharing a bed, I can sleep on the floor or outside on the couch,” Mika quickly said, worried that Karam might feel uncomfortable around him after the incidents that happened earlier on today.
“Oh n-no it’s okay hyung, I don’t mind, we can share the bed. I’ll … take the right side of the bed,” Karam replied back as he quickly moved over to the side he claimed.
Mika smiled back before moving over to the left side and pulling the covers back. Turning the bedside lamp on, Mika then went to turn the main light off. Together they slid into their sides of the bed before pulling the covers up. After saying a quick goodnight to each other, Mika flipped off the light beside him before turning on his side so his back was facing Karam.
However a few minutes later, Mika could hear some shuffling behind him, sounding like Karam was tossing and turning around. When the shuffling still didn’t stop after a few more minutes, Mika finally turned around in the darkness.
“Karam? You okay?” Mika voiced out in the dark.
“Umm … I-I’m okay, I was just … thinking about … the monsters in the movie from before. S-Sorry I’m disturbing you hyung,” Karam replied back in a small voice.
Knowing full well the Karam was not okay, Mika fumbled around in the darkness before finally locating the younger boy’s shoulder. With a firm grip, Mika pulled Karam against him before enveloping him in a warm embrace.
“Pabo, you’re obviously not okay, I swear I’ll make Hyunmin apologize to you tomorrow,” Mika muttered lightly while drawing light circles on the other’s back.
“Everything’s fine now, I’m here okay. Don’t think about the monsters or the movie itself. Think of the bookstore we went to last Saturday and the all the games we played at the arcade centre, remember how much fun that was?”
Karam nodded and shuffled closer to Mika, focusing on his words and ignoring everything else. Soon Mika felt Karam’s body slowly relax against him and when he was sure the other had fallen asleep Mika stopped talking as he encircled his arms around the other’s body.
Slowly feeling sleep overtake him as well, Mika’s eyelids fluttered shut and he focused on listening to the soft intakes of breaths coming from the angel now lying peacefully asleep in his arms.
