my new host grandma.
holy fuck.
(by the way, i've switched to my second family)
holy FUCKKK this lady is crazy. wednesdays are always half days, custimarily, families usually go to the grandparents house for lunch because the parents are working. so today at dinner (she doesn't live with us, she is here ALWAYS though) we were discussing next wednesday and how i would walk to the primary school and meet my new sisters (about 3 blocks from the secondary school), then walk to her house (about 4 more blocks). but no, it is "dangerous" to walk that far! even though both host parents have pointed out that i AM EIGHTEEN, oh no, its so dangerous, even her, at 70, would not attempt something like that because cars don't stop, and people talk on their phones, and no one pays attention to pedestrians...in this giant town of 15,000. actually, its belgian culture to stop, no matter how fast your going or where you are, if there is a pedestrien. and then there was some yelling betweeen her and her daughter of how her girls need to learn how to do things on their own too, how they'd never learn how to take care of themselves etc. Then the little one who's 8 starts yelling at her "mais Mamy, if you always drive us we'll always be scared to cross the street, we'll be afraid to do anything alone!!!" at this point, i actually laughed out loud. i felt bad because they were all so serious about the matter. then it settled down and everyone was finished and cleaning up and she'd hardly touched her food and she announced "i'm going to take it slow because spagetti doesn't pass very well." I bit my lip and looked away not to laugh.
Her kids all warned me about her too. "When she speaks, you nod and say "oui" at intervals, because you aren't the one doing the talking, she is. Remember that." After dinner the maid came and Louise (sister) told her the grandma was looking for her because she wanted to talk to her and the maid was like "that lady always has something to say." and I laughed again. and we all laughed together. She also spent the whole day telling me about choir concerts in the region, and played me music my relgion teachers choir sang. actually, she had the music on anyways and thats how it started. and it went on..all night. she saves every choir concert ticket, brochure, etc, even though she doesn't know anyone in the choir, she just loves it. I also don't know her name, she introduced herself as "Mamy" (french for grandma), so i have her in my phone as fabienne's mom. I think I'll avoid calling her anything.
